Lit Circles Section 4: Characterization & Conflict

Hi everyone,

Here is the schedule for this week.  This week’s literary focus will be brought to you by, conflict and we will discuss that on Tuesday!

Monday, May the 4th,

A Block: Join Microsoft Teams Meeting

B Block  Join Microsoft Teams Meeting

C Block Join Microsoft Teams Meeting

Monday’s Reading Schedule: Hallowe’en – Thanksgiving (about 25 pages)

You will be rotating the roles forward, please do a check in with your group to ensure everyone understands new role. I will be collecting these on Thursday.

Last week, I asked you to choose a character to characterize, and come to understand greater through their actions, impact on others, and things they say or thing.  You should have filled out your chart using the STEAL method and now have some evidence direct from the story, and an impression in your head as to what that character is like.

The next step is taking that research and creating a well written paragraph that outline your chosen character.  Through some of the character’s actions, effect on others, thoughts, etc., you should have some descriptors, or adjectives to describe this character.  This should form your topic sentence.  Your written evidence is the ‘sketch’, not drawn, but a written descriptor of what he/she is like.  You should have at least one quote from the story. Here are some documents to help you.  This paragraph will be due Friday, you will upload it to teams, but also your blog.

I am sending out confirmation of your group’s time for the discussion on Thursday, can everyone confirm.

Today is a work block to get ready for Discussion #4, but let’s review about conflict and then update your literary log.  What is conflict again?

Conflict is the struggle between opposing forces and forms the basis of the plot.  There are often layers of conflict in a story, such as “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian”.

Write a conflict statement for your literary log this week: The conflict in “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian” is _______________ ______________________ and is person vs __________________ because  “example from story here”.

Complete your role for this week, please ask me if you have any questions.

Thursday, May 7th

Discussions!  I will be setting up a schedule this week.

Your first 4 sets of notes are now due after your discussion.
