Discord is a multipurpose communication tool tons of people from around the world use on a daily basis. It can be used to interact with people in a community, talk with your friends, and making new ones. Discord was originally created by Jason Citron and Stan Vishnevskiy as a better alternative to Skype or TeamSpeak for gamers, since “At the time, all the tools built for the job were slow, unreliable, and complex” (“company” Discord). Discord was released May 13^th of 2015 by Hammer & Chisel Inc. to love from all over the world, boosting it into widespread use and popularity, “Discord began to take off and devoted people who loved our project sprung up around the world” (“company” Discord). Discord even had begun being used by groups and people who didn’t play video games or weren’t directly gamers, “these passionate people realized it could be enjoyed for more purposes” (“company” Discord). Like many forms of social media or sites people who used Discord began to develop their own jargon with words and abbreviations like ping, dm, pfp, icon, nitro, and bot. Discord’s brand and application itself is designed to have a friendly and playful air to it, with it’s mascot being a creature called a Wumpus, a hidden snake game on the website’s 404 screen, as well a many other easter eggs and jokes hidden around the website and application. Discord also offers a wide variety of customization options, from the ability to have different names across different servers, to setting custom status messages for varying amounts of time. People from all over the world can enjoy Discord and chat with friends using it thanks to it being available it 27 different languages, how easy it is to get started with it and use. There really is no limit to who or how someone can use Discord, making it one of the greatest communication/chat focus social media applications/websites available.
