This is my Friday everything changed blog post assignment! I hope you enjoy!
“Social change can happen with the small actions of dedicated individuals” is a statement I feel properly reflects the events, especially the end, of the short story titled “The Friday Everything Changed” or FEC for short. I feel like it reflects FEC well because what Ms. Ralston wasn’t necessarily a big thing, first considering the question of why girls can’t go get the water, and then hitting a home run near the end of the book and stating that two of the girls where going to get the water next week, but it did have quite a ripple effect you could feel during and after the story. Another quote/statement that ties in well the FEC is Gandalf’s quote, “some believe it is only great power that can hold evil in check. But that is not what I found. I have found that it is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep darkness at bay. Small acts of kindness and love.”. Miss Ralston doesn’t exactly have much power over the fact that during the time the book takes place in girls and boys aren’t treated equally, but the fact that she eventually gives the girls a privileged only the boys had shows that she is making sure that at least her class has boys and girls treated as relative equals. Nowadays, there is still a treatment issue in some country and especially religions towards people in the lgbtq+ community, like how in some countries and/or religions it is illegal/disgraceful to be gay or lesbian and is especially illegal/disgraceful to be married to someone of the same sex. Of course this means that many ordinary people who can’t really make the rules for these things are actively protesting this inequality and discrimination, causing change and more awareness of this issue and helping it get better. Even people who aren’t protesting and still showing kindness to and welcoming people of the lgbtq+ community into their lives and relationships and making sure that they’re ok and feel comfortable being who they are. Kindness really is the best way to societal progress.
