ΰ³α¦The Meeting With Timα¦ΰ³
βββββ ΰ³α¦ α¦ΰ³ βββββ
On Tuesday September 24th, 2019, we face timed with someone by the name of Tim Mepham, an older male in his late 70’s with Huntington’s disease.
Because of Huntington’s, Tim had many limitations on what he could do, but it was our job to find a way to make something to help him do something or use something that was difficult for him.

ΰ³α¦The Conceptα¦ΰ³
βββββ ΰ³α¦ α¦ΰ³ βββββ
The thing that caught my attention is that Tim apparently has trouble using his TV remote, which I could somewhat relate with since cable TV remotes have lots of buttons that can prove confusing for anyone.
And so the first concept was draw! The main idea was that the remote would be placed inside a cover via a hole in the side and the buttons would have pegs at the end that would line up with the buttons represented at the top. The buttons would also be much bigger making them easier to press.

ΰ³α¦The Prototypeα¦ΰ³
βββββ ΰ³α¦ α¦ΰ³ βββββ
After some discussions and modeling, we printed a non-functional prototype via my father’s 3D printer so we could get a better feel for our creation.
After holding our design and actually playing with it a bit we decided on a couple of things, the first thing is that it was very hard and uncomfortable to hold, and the second thing being the volume up and down buttons where kind of awkward to use.

ΰ³α¦The Buttonsα¦ΰ³
βββββ ΰ³α¦ α¦ΰ³ βββββ
Another topic during our development of the remote was how the buttons of the remote would function, since me and my group mates knew making proper, functional buttons wasn’t an option.
We ended up deciding that because of how light filament (the kind of plastic that is commonly used to 3D print) was, the buttons could simply rest on top on the buttons they needed to press and therefor when pushed down, they would push the buttons!

ΰ³α¦The Final Productα¦ΰ³
βββββ ΰ³α¦ α¦ΰ³ βββββ
Sadly, we didn’t have enough time or resources to make a physical, functional copy of our creation, but we did get pretty close to our final design!
Our final design was decided to fit onto the arm of a couch so that holding it wouldn’t be a problem, and also decided that the remote would be held in place inside the cover by claw-like things, and the hole wouldn’t have any kind of cover so the sensor could still be seen and therefor the remote would still be functional.

ΰ³α¦What did I learn?α¦ΰ³
βββββ ΰ³α¦ α¦ΰ³ βββββ
During the CBL project, I learned much better
modeling techniques that will be useful to me in the future, making that final model was a bit of a challenge but I did figure it out. I also learned some design techniques that helped make sure the remote cover would be comfortable and easy to use.
When it comes to my learning goals, I think two things, the first, I was very ambitious when I wrote my rubric and learning goals and I found this out very quickly, and the second thing is that I know I didn’t do very good on my own rubric because I didn’t know how hard this project was going to be when I started to wright it.

ΰ³α¦How do you think it went?α¦ΰ³
βββββ ΰ³α¦ α¦ΰ³ βββββ
I think that me and my group worked very well
together, and that the group I was in wasn’t a reason our final product suffered, I think that was more, again, about the time and resources we had.
βββββ ΰ³α¦ α¦ΰ³ βββββ
ΰ³α¦What did you do well?α¦ΰ³
βββββ ΰ³α¦ α¦ΰ³ βββββ
I think our ideas and creations where very good,Β and we worked very hard and well together.
βββββ ΰ³α¦ α¦ΰ³ βββββ
ΰ³α¦What could you improve?α¦ΰ³
βββββ ΰ³α¦ α¦ΰ³ βββββ
If I could improve anything, I think I would just want us to have recognized our limitations sooner so that would could have at least produced something of more substance.
βββββ ΰ³α¦ α¦ΰ³ βββββ
ΰ³α¦How to do feel about CBL?α¦ΰ³
βββββ ΰ³α¦ α¦ΰ³ βββββ
Personally, I didn’t enjoy it. I was extremely stressful and how our work time was formatted made it even more stressful, if I could choose to do it again I wouldn’t.

ΰ³α¦Thanks for reading!α¦ΰ³

You did such a great job sharing the whole journey of how you were able to help Tim deal with some of the difficulties he has with having Huntingtonβs disease. I am super proud of you and your group for keeping at it. I love your idea of working with another group to create a remote that would fit onto the arm of a couch so that holding it wouldnβt be a problem. I appreciate your honesty about this activity. How could we make something like this less stressful?
I think to make this project less stressful, we should have the time to work on it in class closer together, instead of getting it mixed in with other things, and having it finish before we get new projects.
