- Read the articles from the Guardian and the Huffington Post. What are their main points? Do the two authors share the same values? Which article do you agree with more and why? Why don’t you agree with the other one? Refer to specific points from each article that you agree and disagree with.
MP: A Member of Parliament, the representative of the voters to a parliament.
Senator: Senators use the wisdom collected from their own experiences to give minorities a strong voice in Parliament.
Minister: a politician who holds public office in a national or regional goverment, making and implementing decisions on policies in conjunction with the other ministers.
Prime Minister: the head of a cabinet and the leader of the ministers in the executive branch of government, often in a parliamentary or semi-presidential system. In many systems, the prime minister selects and may dismiss other members of the cabinet, and allocates posts to members within the government.
Governor General: The chief representative of the Crown in a Commonwealth country of which the British monarch is head of state.
5th place: Prime Minister. I do not want to be the head of a cabinet, nor to be choosing ministers to leave or bring in. Too much pressure. 4th place: Governor General. I don’t want to be delivering speeches from another country, like Britten. 3rd place: Minister. It would be cool to talk with other ministers, along with also making decisions with them. 2nd place: Senator. It would also be cool to be a senator, using wisdom and past experiences to give minority a strong voice. The only problem is that I am not old enough to posses wisdom like that. 1st place: MP. I would like to represent the voters of a parliament. It would be nice to speak the peoples minds, and to also represent what they want.
Pressure groups/lobbyists are people who share their common interests. There goal is to accomplish limited aims and they usually break up after there goal has been reached. An example is the Spirit Bear Youth Coalition, who wanted to protect kermode (spirit) bears and there habitat. they created the international youth-led environmental coalition. the BC government announced plans to protect two thirds of the kermode bear habitat. a downside is that a group of people could agree, but other people could not agree. lobbyists acuire hired by institutions and groups to deal with lawmakers
petitions can be very effective. The government will listen to the people and there concerns, and will respond to all petitions they find worthy. It is a policy of most Canadian government departments to respond to all letters. The petitions can give positive results because if one person wrights one, there could be others who share the same view. a downside is that the government can turn them down if they don’t seem of importance.
Civil disobedience is a active professed refusal of citizens to obey certain laws/demands. An example is the incident with Michael Brown. Some of the benefits of civil disobedience, are that it’s a way to protest without breaking that law, and that it can draw attention to the issue. The downsides is that it can result in jail time and it doesn’t always create change.
