Electrical house project- Karly Traub, Richelle Gordon, Emily Shannon

introducing the electric house project

we were given this project to demonstrate what we know about circuit testing and building, it was mandatory for us to include the following…

  • 4 separate rooms
  • 4 separate circuits
  • parallel circuit
  • series circuit
  • complex circuit
  • a circuit of our choice demonstrating what we know.

Electric house project questions

  1. You have 3 lightbulbs. All have the same intensity when lit. Explain how you can prove to a classmate that they are connected I series by unscrewing one lightbulb. Support your answer.

  • ANSWER: if you have a series circuit it means that all the light bulbs are connected by only one path for electrons t flow, and the electrons flow through all the lightbulbs. So, when you remove one lightbulb it will break the flow of these electrons all the other ones will go out too because the flow of electrons will stop and would stop the electricity being produced.

  1. You have three light bulbs. All have the same intensity when lit. Explain how you can prove to a classmate that they are connected in parallel by unscrewing one light bulb.

  • ANSWER: parallel circuits are all connected with its own piece of wire, meaning there are multiple pathways for the electrons to flow through. The electrons would now have an option in which way they want to go meaning if one light bulb is unscrewed they will still be able to travel through the remaining wire

  1. You have three light bulbs. Two are connected in parallel. This parallel combination is connected in series with the third light bulb. Describe the relative intensity of each bulb. Support your answer.

  • ANSWER: the 2 lightbulbs connected in the parallel would be less vibrant because in the series the electrons are forced to travel through it, but with the parallel they can still choose which wire they want to go through, meaning that there will be more electrons flowing through the series.
  1.  In question number three, describe the relative intensities of the two remaining lit bulbs if one of the bulbs in parallel was unscrewed. Support your answer.

  • ANSWER: If 2 of the bulbs were on a parallel circuit and we unscrewed one, the other one would not be affected, because they are being connected by a different wire. but the remaining parallel bulb will shine brighter than when both parallels were there. The series bulb and the one remaining parallel bulb will no have the same brightness because they have the same amount of electrical current flowing through them.

How To Make Your House Greener: Solution fluency

DEFINE: The challenge that I was given is to research and come up with ideas to make my house more energy efficient. This project includes the solution fluency (the 3 d’s) and with those fluencies, I was able to find renovations to contribute to a greener home. The home I have chosen to improve is my mom’s house, it is 2,075.98 square feet, with 15 windows and 12 doors.

DISCOVER: after searching on the internet for ways to conserve energy in my home I found 3 things other homeowners have done to make their houses more energy efficient.

OPTION 1: Image result for how much are low flow shower heads

install low-flow shower heads, this act will cause a major improvement in the ecosystem and your hydro bill by reducing the flow to 2.5 gpm when your conventional showerhead will use 5 gallons per minute

the approximate cost for these low-flow shower heads are anywhere from 20$ – 50$ which isn’t that much considering how much it will save in the long

DRAWBACKS:

some drawbacks for this product are

  • since the low flow showerheads don’t use the same force as a normal showerhead it might take longer to rinse out your products, meaning it may not save you that much if you have to take a 30-minute shower with the low-flow but 5 minutes with the normal showerhead.

OPTION 2:

Image result for insulations

another option is to insulate your walls and ceilings this will make it so your heater and air conditioner do not need to work as hard, which will save you money

the approximate cost to get insulation put in your home is around 1,000$ but the more you get insulated the more the cost will be (AND VICE-VERSA)

DRAWBACKS

  • it is quite an expensive process because the company would need to remove the drywall, then place the insulation and then cover it back up with drywall, it can be especially expensive if you are planning to insulate a large area of your home

OPTION 3:

Image result for draft blocker

cover any small cracks in your windows and or doors to reduce the amount of heat leakage. You can buy this product called draft blockers, it comes in a roll almost like tape and you just stick it on the places that need to be sealed

the approximate price for this product is 15.99 for a 33-foot long role of draft blocker

DRAWBACKS

  • this isn’t a permanent solution
  • can come unstuck

DREAM AND DELIVER

OPTION 1:

Image result for phone

I had a crazy thought, what if the power from our phones could create electricity for our houses, and whenever we are using our phon electricity is being made, which could be used to heat or cool our houses since the average person uses there phone for more than 4 hours a day, that could save you a lot of money on electricity.

COST: this would cost you anything if anything it would save you money on your monthly electricity bill

DRAWBACKS:

  • if you don’t have a phone this option would not work

OPTION 2:

Image result for window

another idea that I had was that if the windowpanes in your house could be switched out so in the summer the windowpanes would repel heat, and in the winter it would absorb it. This could be very eco-friendly because you won’t need to use as much energy to heat or cool your house i know this

COST: the closest thing I could find to my idea, was a heat absorbing stick-on film that you would stick on your windows, the cost of that is 36.39 per sheet

DRAWBACKS:

  • quite expensive
  • may not work
  • only temporary

OPTION 3:

Image result for bracelet that can turn steps into energy

I am a dancer, meaning that move a lot and I had an idea “what if I could wear a bracelet that could use my energy to fuel my house?” even if you don’t play any sports, I guarantee you walk almost 10,000 steps a day, and if this bracelet you take those steps and turn it into energy that could fuel your home, it would save you so much money.

DRAWBACKS:

  • if you are in a wheelchair the bracelet won’t track your motion
  • if you work somewhere where you are sitting all day, you won’t get as much usable energy

SET BC video project

This is our SET BC project about the salmon population in the Coquitlam river, and how it is rapidly decreasing because of some of our everyday actions. During the course of this project we had to collaborate, and share ideas, by using our knowledge and research that we have found through out the time we were given to do this project. Our target audience was the General public around the Coquitlam river, to hope that citizens around the river will learn about the river and the salmon that swims in it.

Our group worked very well together to create this project. We had similar ideas which made it easy to collaborate, we had split the project into several parts so we each had an equal load, i was in charge of the taking finding videos to insert into our video, while Richelle was the editor, and Karly was the script writer. That system seemed to work pretty well because we used our strengths which made it quite easy to get it done. The one thing we could have have improved on is taking more of our own videos (instead of taking them from the internet) another thing we could have improved on is putting more detail on the story board instead of  jumping right to filming. I really quite enjoyed this project and the group i was working with.

Wonder Project

The question I researched for the wonder project was ”Should we be able to change the DNA of our unborn children”

Studies have shown that if you really wanted you could design your baby, their hair colour up to their intelligence and their personality. You can choose to remove all possible chances of your child developing a disability in the womb, by making sure that their genetic code is a repeated pattern, and that there are no defects with the lettering.

But how is it possible ?

well here is a basic explanation by Jessica Berg

”For a number of years now we have had the ability to alter genetic material in a cell, using a technique called CRISPR. The DNA that makes up our genome comprises long sequences of base pairs, each base indicated by one of four letters. These letters form a genetic alphabet, and the “words” or “sentences” created from a particular order of letters are the genes that determine our characteristics. Sometimes words can be “misspelled” or sentences slightly garbled, resulting in a disease or disorder. Genetic engineering is designed to correct those mistakes. CRISPR is a tool that enables scientists to target a specific area of a gene, working like the search-and-replace function in Microsoft Word, to remove a section and insert the “correct” sequence.”

But should everyone have access to it?

“If nobody gets hurt, and everyone has access to it, says Hughes, than genetic modification is perfectly fine, and restricting it is an assault on reproductive fredom”

Do I think everyone should have access to it?

I Personally believe that no one should have access to it because if you went through the trouble of choosing whether you would like children, and if you really wanted a child that bad you would accept them for who they are, fetus implantation, with the strategy of genetic modification can be anywhere from 100,000 – 1 million dollars. It is proven that kids who were genetically modified have social struggles, they might feel undervalued, and it may feel as though the parents genetically modified you because you weren’t good enough, and you may feel like you are not their 100% children. Which can end up causing more issues in the future.

With doing the research of this question, I have realized that I have many questions on this subject, and I would love to do more research on it in the future. Some of the questions I have are

  • what if you receive a fetal genetic modification implantation and the pregnancy goes wrong (miscarriage) could you get your money back?
  • what happens if  the baby doesn’t survive birth?

I have learned a lot while researching this project, to answer my question of “is it/should it be possible to change the DNA of our unborn child?” the answer is yes, it is possible, but while doing my research i have decided  I think that for the future of you unborn child you should not use genetic implantation, because in the long run it can make life for you child not as pleasant as it could be

In conclusion I have learned that ”designer” babies is a term being used in our everyday life. Some doctors think it is a completely harmless procedure that can be performed for all parents who would like to design their future children.

Part 2: ADL 10 refelction

what questions did you have to research in order to research your question

I had to search up a lot of different websites, where  I found a lot of things, the main ones was that subject that I chose is a very byest topic and opinions were heavily influenced in the source My main question was Should we be able to change the dna of our unborn children, but to refine my question I needed to do research on google to get a bit of an understanding of what I was getting myself into.

what new or familiar tools did you try to use as you worked through this project

I learned how to use the schools resources (through class websites) and I learned how to refine my google searches so I can choose exactly what comes up as a result using the + and – to cut out the parts i  .

what was the process you used to investigate your topic

I first had to break the question down into parts because if I were to just google my question I would get 1 answer, when in fact I want multiple opinions stating multiple things, I made sure to try to stay away from heavy opinions because that is only one persons opinion, not backed up by research

how did you verify and cite the information you found

I made sure that the website had an author and a publication date. Another thing I did was if there were a lot of ads I would not use the site, because credible sources do not have ads.

how did the process of completing this challenge go, what could you have done better

One thing that I could have done better is to spend more time writing the blog post, because I used my opinion when I should have just included information instead.
