Top 5 Things I learned in Math 10

This semester, I learned a lot of new things. Here are my top 5 things that I learned about.

  1. Trigonometry: This was my first time ever learning about trigonometry, and I would have to say that this was my favourite unit in Math 10. Something that I really liked about trigonometry, was learning how to use my scientific calculator. I had no idea what half the buttons on that calculator did until we started trigonometry. I learned what sin, cos, and tan do and what they stand for (sine, cosine, and tangent). I learned about SOH CAH TOA, and that was one of my favourite concepts in Math 10 because it was simple to use, and I understood it straight away. I found trigonometry really interesting, and the best part about it was I understood it really well.
  2. Functions: Definitely one of the hardest units in Math 10 for me was functions. I absolutely hated this unit and didn’t understand it at all, at first. I had to watch lots of videos online (khan academy) because I just wasn’t getting it. Eventually I started understanding it a bit better and I can solve functions properly now. I will continue working on this so that I have a strong understanding of functions when I go in to grade 11.
  3. Prime Factorization: Another one of my favourite units in Math 10 was prime factorization. My favourite thing about this unit was learning how to use factor trees. I found this method extremely helpful, and wrote my very first Math 10 blog post about it. I feel like this is a tool that I will be able to use in grade 11, because it is simple and works really well when trying to find the prime factors of a certain number.
  4.  Elimination Method: At first, this method was hard to understand, but the more I did it, the easier it became. I really liked using the elimination method because you can go back and verify your answer by inputting your final answer in to the original equation. This is another really good tool I can use in grade 11.
  5. Online Tools: The last thing that I think is really important, especially this semester since we started online school, is online tools. One of my favourite online tools that we used quite a bit this year was desmos. I found desmos really helpful especially when learning about slopes. Some other online websites that I found really helpful were khan academy, IXL, quizizz, and I even found some really useful videos on YouTube. The great thing about these tools, is that they are available to use anytime I need to use them.

Overall, I learned a lot in Math 10 this year, and I hope I can apply what I’ve learned this year in Math 10 to Math 11.
