What are some things you have learned and/or tasks you have accomplished this semester? (Use videos, pictures, upload materials etc. as evidence of learning in your blog)

This semester in Tech Team, I have learned many things that have enriched my knowledge of Technology. Earlier in the semester, we had an assignment where we were supposed to explore and try out the Divi Builder Extension which can help us personalise our EduBlogs. Before this assignment, my EduBlog was not very interesting or unique but after spending some time to figure out how this extension works I was able to change the physical appearance of my blog. I also learned how to make individual posts using Divi Builder which definitely took more time than using the regular post features, however really stood out from my classmate’s blog posts. I used it for my Thermos Challenge Blog Post which was for my Physics 11 class. I learned how to add animations and set up my page in different sections to add images, open/close tabs and a photo gallery. This has been by far my biggest and greatest accomplishment because I can see how much I learned from just using this simple yet interesting extension.

Example of things I have learned:

What aspects of your work are successful?

Before this year, I have never really worked with green screens or stop motion editing. This year Maya, Kelsey and I were in a project that required editing a video with a green screen and making it into stop motion. This was a success for me because even though it took hours upon hours of editing and working through many challenges, I still managed to make a pretty amazing video. I also found out how to work with the Cricut which was a very interesting machine to learn how to use. It really has no limit and you can make so many things with it like stickers, cards and small printout.

What aspects of your work is challenging?

An aspect of work that I found challenging this year would definitely be (as mentioned above) green screen editing and stop motion editing. As we get into higher grades, many of the projects we are assigned are video projects that require editing. Before high school, I never used video editing apps like iMovie, so I am still improving my editing skills. Stop motions are especially hard to make because you need to take many pictures with little movement to avoid big glitches in the video. Although I am having challenges with this aspect now, I believe that with a little more practice and patience I will be able to refine these skills even more.

What steps did you take to overcome these challenges / what adjustments did you need to make?

In regards to editing or any technology-based problem I may encounter, I always try and problem solve first. I find that when my brain has some time to try new things on its own and see if it can solve the issue by itself, it gains the capacity to think outside of the box. However, if I find myself in a situation where I may need a suggestion from someone who is more experienced than me and has a wider set of skills that can help my learning, I always ask questions. I find that when I ask questions I always end up learning so much more because I usually get my question answered and learn something new. When I encountered difficulties with editing the stop motion, first I asked my friends, then my teachers and finally, I reached a point where I could do it on my own!

Is there anything you can do improve? (with your approach to the project, or altering the project)

In regards to my movie editing skills, the only thing I can do to improve is PRACTICE! Like most of us already know, in order to improve in a skill you need to use it more often to expand your abilities. Ever since my last editing projects, I have volunteered to edit all other group video projects which are time-consuming, but I have found that it has drastically improved my video editing skills. In addition to practice, questions are also a great way to improve in a subject that you are still refining.

As Riverside continues to immerse itself into innovation and technology, what do you think Riverside can do to provide support and help for teachers and students?

I think that Riverside is very fortunate to have a Tech Support Team and I think it is important that we continue to help students around our school community. Even though through the recent years the Tech Team has provided most of it’s help through face-to-face contact, today we are faced with the challenge in helping students online. I think that going forward, something that Riverside could do to help teachers and students continues providing help through the Online Wave Tech Support Team and answer questions in any way that they can. I think something that would also be very cool is if the Tech Team created its own mini YouTube channel that had students and teachers solving simple technology-based problems. I know that there are some similar videos about Wifi connection issues but I think if there were student faces in them, they would become more engaging.

I also think that when school resumes the Tech Team should try and have more workshops with teachers where we can share our technology findings with teachers. I know this year we tried it with MicroBits however there were many people that showed up on Mondays. I definitely think that this is an idea that has the potential to grow and become something amazing in terms of supporting teachers and students with new technology.

Do you have any feedback or suggestions, as we move forward, that could help the Tech Team meet the needs of our school and staff / be more effective?

This is only my first year in the Tech Team but I have been impressed by how much it helps and affects our school community. Whenever I am at the wave, I have the amazing opportunity to help individuals with technology questions while working on my own technology-based competencies. I think that going forward in the online school and learning environment, the only way for us to be effective is to keep encouraging questions but also students helping one another. It is going to be much harder to help students online however I think if we use our resources like emailing and Microsoft Teams to the fullest, we will be able to meet Riverside’s new technology needs and even more. I think that going forward we should also continue having regular Tech Team meetings where we can brainstorm new ideas together. I think that in order for us to be effective as a team, we need to work together to gather ideas on how best we can provide help as a whole!
