Digital Footprint

1)How might your digital footprint affect your future opportunities? Give at least 2 examples.

Your digital footprint is essential nowadays to make sure you become successful in your career. Your future college or university can change their view on you depending on how you seem online. If you post something inappropriate online or follow any rude accounts, you can be told that you’re not good enough for possibly your dream school. Same goes for jobs. Before they accept you into your new job, they will first do research on your digital footprint. They will search online for any of your social media accounts and if they see something unsuitable there, then your hiring can be cancelled. Although your digital footprint can affect you negatively, it can also affect you positively. Most jobs and colleges will be looking at the work you’ve done for the past few years of your life online which means they will get a better idea of the great person you are. All your previous work online is a part of your digital footprint which can give you opportunities if you make it a positive one.

2)Describe at least three strategies that you can use to keep your digital footprint appropriate and safe. Having social media isn’t necessarily a bad thing for your digital footprint. It could actually make it very positive depending on what you do online. for that reason, there are certain strategies made to make it easier to achieve a good digital footprint. The first strategy I would recommend is to T.H.I.N.K before you post.

Think of this…

T-Is it true?

H- Is it helpful?

I-Is it Inspiring?

N-Is it necessary?

K-Is it kind?

Another strategy I would suggest is to make sure you aren’t following or getting followed by any inappropriate accounts. Check your social media accounts from time to time, it shouldn’t be too difficult right? Deleting old accounts should be another good way to make your digital footprint more positive. It is especially a great idea if those accounts have some things that are more personal. The last thing that I would say would be a good idea for keeping your digital footprint is to try to get your work out there. Although posting inappropriate things isn’t a good idea, posting the work you’ve done throughout the years is better than having no social media at all. This way, you can keep a record of your previous projects without having to worry too much about losing them. Showcasing your work on a blog or social media account can act as a portfolio type of thing and can really give you great opportunities in the future so.

3)What information did you learn that you would pass on to other students? How would you go about telling them?

If I were to tell someone about everything I learned about the digital footprint, I would say it in a way that is straight forward. I would explain that our whole life today basically depends on what we do online. I feel that this might be the best way to explain it to someone because they will probably listen. Lets put it this way, when I first heard about all of this business, I was a bit shocked. I found out that you can get kicked out of your possible dream college because of a single post or something else inappropriate you may have done online. Although all the work you are doing in your school really depends on your future opportunities, your digital footprint is a thing that can change somethings. A digital footprint isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Depending on whether it is positive or not can give you a higher chance of applying into a new job or college. So I would warn to keep that in mind whenever you would go online next time. Otherwise, their lives can be changed in an instant.
