Desmos Art Functions Card 2018
https://www.desmos.com/calculator/dg0sq9mrml
I made the phrase “MERRY CHRISTMAS at the beginning of my project. I use the absolute value and some linear function to make the M, constant function and vertical lines to make the E. When I was making the R, I started to use quartic functions to make the curve of R. Y is the same sense when I made E. C is a quadratic function that reflected in y=x. Actually, S is made of two C. When I was doing the prase, I did lots of function transformation to make it easier. Then I started to make the tree. I used some radical and rational function to make the top and side of the tree. I also made some circles on the tree. I made the adornment of the tree by using sine function. The challenge for me is the face and body of mine. I don’t really know which function do I should use to make my body and face more real. so, I read our math book to figure out which function should I use. Through this project, I can really understand every kind of function’s shape and it improves me the knowledge of the function part.

Canada Prepares for War
1 Explain how Canada’s decision to go to war in WWII was different than WWI
In WWI, Canada was automatically forced into the war when Britain declared war to Germany because the Canada was one of the Britain colony. A lot people who were loyal to Britain were excited to be going to war. After the WWI Canada gained autonomy from Britain and became a nation; and were no longer obligated to fight for Britain. 1930’s, Canada were affected by the Great Depression, then the WWII came and Canada were not excited to join the war. Prime Minister King, held a session in parliament to decide if Canada would join the war. The Minister of Justice, Ernest Lapointe gave a speech about conscription won the support of Quebec. The leader of the CCF, J.S. Woodsworth was against going to war. But the parliament decided that it would be good for Canada to help Britain in the War.
2 What were the BCATP and CD Howe’s Total War economy?
British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP) were the pilots that came to Canada to train with British instruction. The program was a big major Canadian helped to the war effort. BCATP trained 130 000 pilots, navigators, flight engineers, and ground crew. The demands of the nation that enters the war have to balance and control the economy. 1940, the Department of Munitions and Supply was created and CD Howe’s was put in charge. He organize and controls and what to produce and how to produce, the demands of the country.
3 Come up with a statement that the best describes Canada’s attitude towards WWII and support it by referring to the evidence from the class and the textbook (#1-2 above).
I feel as though Canada was willing to help contribute to the war if need be but unlike WWI Canada has much more autonomy since then and they can do what they want as long as it fits them. It like what it said in question 1 Canada doesn’t have an obligation to Britain in war. Although they were willing to help in the war I don’t think that Canada really wanted to join in the war since Howe made many Canadians make things they didn’t even know how to make showing that Canada doesn’t have much interest in war.
Conditions on the Front
Dear wife
I am so joyful to receive your letter. Hope the war can end as soon as possible, I got a lot things want talk to you and my daughter.

I heard the Red Baron was shot down by a Canadian! I am so proud for our Canadian, I know we can do anything, and we will win the war! Also I heard German was sinking a America cruise ship, there are lot of innocent people on it, it’s so terrible!
Tomorrow also is keeping break the enemy’s defense, hope will get some possible. I am so tired, wants to get home get a shower and eats your meals, which I can back home before the Christmas. Please tell me more about you, my daughter and Canada, looking forward to your replies!
Causes of WWI
- ASerbia -> B Austria -> C Russia -> D Germany -> E France -> F Britain
- Alliances: Russia forms alliance with Serbia and supports them in war against Austria. Also, after Russia’s treaty with Germany ended, Russia forms Triple Entente with France and Britain for protection and defense. Anschluss, a Dual Alliance between Germany and Austria, forms to create alliances that will isolate France.
- Nationalism: The Balkans fought for nationalism, supporting Bosnia breaking free from Austria-Hungary to become independent or even join Serbia.
- Imperialism:Germany, France, Britain were three main countries rushing to claim land, especially in Africa. The ‘Race for Africa’ meant their navy and access to the Mediterranean was key, and the Germans were mainly blocked by the British.
- Militarism: Germany and Britain start a naval race, which led to both countries alarmingly increasing the amount of money put into their military. Britain also had a ‘two power standard’, meaning they built their navy to be better than two other countries combined. The two countries gaining so much military power in little time got others to worry and also increase their military.
- Sequence of Events:
- Black Hand, a terrorist group from Serbia motivated by Balkan nationalism, assassins Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Austria demands to be allowed into Serbia for an investigation but Serbia refuses.
- The assassination and Serbia not accepting a search leads to Austria declaring war against Serbia. (July 28, 1914)
- Russia, who had an alliance with Serbia, sends support to fight Austria (July 31)
- Germany, who had an alliance with Austria, declares war against Serbia&Russia (August 1)
- France also orders general mobilization, fighting against Germany.
- Britain helps defend French coast against the Germans. The Entente between Britain and France meant that Britain would help defend but not attack. Later, Britain declared war on Germany when Germany invaded neutral Belgium. (August 4)

Defining Poverty
- In your own words, explain the problems with measuring poverty (standard of living, absolute vs relative, HDI)
The standard of living – Economists usually use GDP to compare living standards in different countries. The nationals of a country with a higher GDP per head are likely to enjoy higher living standards than people living in a country with a lower GDP per head. However, this may be an inaccurate picture because the cost of living in some of the developing countries is much lower than in the developed countries. So, one US dollar may be able to purchase more things in developing countries than in developed countries.
HDI is a composite statistic of life expectancy, education, and per capita income indicators, which are used to rank countries into four tiers of human development. However this data is an average overview of all the recorded data, the unrecorded data is not considered or calculated and that were the gap falls through in the system.
Canada – The best way to measure poverty in Canada is absolute poverty because I think this way is the best way to measure people which are living in the same country. So that the cost of “necessities” is the same.
2. What do you think is the best way to measure poverty in Canada and the world.
Canada – The best way to measure poverty in Canada is absolute poverty because I think this way is the best way to measure people which are living in the same country. So that the cost of “necessities” is the same.
World – The best way to measure poverty in the world is HDI because it is looking at health, education, and income. Instead of just looking at the income and consumption, I think it is more comprehensive.
Population pyramid
So, this is population chart and population pyramid for China. The dependency ratio is 38.8, it’s low.
The birth rates of China have a slightly increase recently, while the death rates have a mineral decline. With the comparison of both sides of the population pyramid, the numbers of female and male are mostly balanced in most the age groups. But for cohorts under 40, there are fewer women/girls. Also, there is a large amount of population in the suitable workers’ age group. Accordingly, China now is on the stage 4, with two convex sides on the population pyramid, it’s a contracting population pyramid, where peoples have longer life expectancy with low birth rate and low death rate.
The big concern for China is the aging population that will require more social services and a lack of a workforce to pay for that. That’s why they recently exchanged the One Child Policy into a Two Child Policy.
