Digital Footprint

1. How might your digital footprint affect your future oppurtunities? Give at least two examples.

Your digital footprint can heavily affect everything that you do in the future. Take for example you applied to UBC and you have good grades, and a good record at school. Even though you have all these things that set you up for a good future, if the university decides to search you up and sees that you post inappropriate things like drugs and etc, they will not accept you because of future problems. Also, this can affect you when you are getting a job in the future. When you apply for any job, most employers will search you up on google and try to find anything they can about you, whether it is positive or negative, so you might not get that job after all if your footprint isn’t that great. Finally, this can also help or not help you in scholarships/etc. If you try to get some scholarships, the people will look at your footprint to see if you have done anything bad in the past, because if there is something bad, they would not want to have those problems in the future.

2. Describe at least three strategies that you can use to keep your digital footprint appropriate and safe.

First and most importantly, you should stay careful of what you post. Because employers will be looking at all of your social media, maybe it would not be the best idea to post something inappropriate in high school or in middle school. Secondly, you should always have a private account on any social media platform if you were to create an account. A lot of public accounts aren’t the safest, and can lead to some bad things in the future, like lots of scams at such, so it is much better to stay private on the internet. Last but not least, this is common sense for everyone, but you should always think before you do anything. Is this really something I should post and can it affect me in the future? You should always think about posting something like a comment or a post because who knows, maybe it will affect you in the future. This also goes in real life, you should always think before you say something you should not, because it can lead to bad consequences.

3. What information did you learn that you would pass on to other students? How would you go about telling them?

About your digital footprint, similar to the three strategies that you can use for a positive digital footprint, always keep in mind these three things. 1. Always be careful of what you post. 2. Always have a private account and 3. Think before you do anything. These three are very essential in the “real world”, because your digital footprint is also what sets your reputation in life. Although there can be some things where it is not true, for the most part, it will have a huge effect in your life because modern day humans use technology a lot, so even the slightest image or post can create your reputation. I would tell students about these three things, and to always be careful. A bit scary, right?
