CHAPTER 6, 7, 8 LEARNING OUTCOMES AND VOCABULARY (January 2017)

After WWII, the world entered a time of icy tensions between Communism and democracy.  This became known as the Cold War.  The world was on edge as nuclear weapons were being stockpiled as it did not want to go to war again knowing these weapons could be used.  The League of Nations will become the United Nations whose goal will be to keep collective security.

We’ll begin with looking at international events in the 1950s in relation to Canada.

  1. Debrief document analysis of the Japanese Internment
  2. We’ll switch gears back to Europe and focus on how the war on the continent ended.  Please take out your sheet of guided notes that we started before the break (where you took some notes on D-Day).  It was entitled “The Final Push to Victory”.

During WWII, the War Measures Act was used to ensure the safety, order, and good government of the country.  It was used to limit the threat of “enemy aliens”.  Japanese Canadians were deemed such a threat and had their personal rights and freedoms infringed upon.  Was the government justified to intern Japanese Canadians in camps?  As you are learning about the details of this internment, make comparisons to the internment of Ukrainian Canadians in WWI.

  1.  Background info
  2. Video clip
  3. Analyze the following primary and secondary sources with this prompt in mind:  “To what extent was the Canadian government justified to intern Japanese Canadians during and after WWII?”

Happy New Year!  I hope you had a lovely break and are feeling refreshed and rejuvenated!

Before the break we were studying Canada’s participation in WWII – specifically our contributions to battle in Asia and Europe.  Go to Kahoot for a quick review of what we’ve learned thus far.

Let’s re-train our focus back to Canada – what were Canadians doing during the war to contribute to “total war”?  As we complete this activity today, compare and contrast Canada’s contributions on the homefront in WWI and WWII
