We’ve arrived at our last unit – the history of our own province, British Columbia!

Our province was built upon the resource industries, such as lumber, coal mining, gold rush, agriculture, fur trade, and fisheries.  Even today, these industries are part of BC’s economy and earn wealth for the province.

But those industries would not be successful without workers.  A large number of immigrants came to settle in BC and live amongst the First Nations.  As with the rest of Canada, British settlers were enticed to live in our province, yet other groups also came for a new life, prosperity, and employment.  Many of these people were not accepted or treated equally by society, the government, and in the workplace.

For this unit, you will explore the history of our province through the eyes of a specific group of people.  How did they contribute to building our province?  What was their history?  There are many books you can study about the British settlers’ experience and contributions to our province – let’s spend time learning about the histories of those whose stories are not as often told.
