Poetry comparison

I think that Langston Hughes’s “The Negro Speaks of Rivers” was better at reaching a wider audience than Countee Cullen’s “Yet do I Marvel” because of the language, structure, and tone of the poem.  Also people know more about the events that Hughes was alluding to in his poem which leads to an easier understanding of the theme of the poem.  Hughes was able to fit in a lot of figurative language while at the same time letting the audience really feel the way he is feeling towards the theme.  The fact that the poem was free verse lets a wider audience appreciate what he was trying to say between all the allusions and metaphors.

In times of darkness, what gives us the courage to persevere?

This is a photo of Terry Fox.  At just 19 years old, Terry Fox was diagnosed with a cancer called osteosarcoma and had his right leg amputated.  Terry was a great athlete who was a long distance runner and a basketball player and when he was faced with this challenge, he decided to do something about it.  He had the idea to run across Canada, from coast to coast, in hopes of raising money towards the disease that ended up taking his, and so many other peoples lives.  Terry’s run went main stream and has, to date, raised over 650 million dollars.  He unfortunately passed away midway through his marathon of hope at just 22.  Terry’s legacy shows that no matter how difficult things get, one can always find the courage to accomplish inspiring brave acts.

Float your Boat

We had to build a boat that could hold the most pennies.  If your boat is longer then it would be better because it has more room to fit the pennies.  My groups boat ended up holding 66 pennies.  We thought it would be ideal if the boat was long and bowl-shaped so that it would fit the most possible pennies.  If I could change anything, I would change our boat from being less bowl-shaped into more of a flat boat so that the weight of the pennies will be more evenly distributed.

What I learned

This week in math, we are learning about polynomials.  I learned how to multiply polynomials using FOIL.  FOIL stands for :

F- first term in each bracket

O- outside terms

I- inside terms

L- last term in each bracket

Example: (6-x)(1+4x)

=6+24x-x-4x^2

=-4x^2+23x+6

GCF/LCM

The new method that I found is called the ladder method (example below).  What you do is you write down the numbers and find a common factor between the two numbers to divide by and you divide until you no longer have a common factor.  If you then want to find the GCF, you simply multiply the numbers on the left, which were the factors you divided by to begin with.  If you want to find the LCM, you multiply the numbers on the left and at the bottom, as shown in the example below.win_20160914_20_28_48_pro win_20160914_20_29_02_pro

I prefer the prime factorization method we learned in class because it is easier and less time consuming for me.
