Breaking the view of a single story

The world seems to be looked at with squinted eyes, I am on a mission to start looking at the world with them wide open.

Judging people before getting to know them is a thing we are all granted, whether we mean to or not, we are all guilty, but is it really our fault? The media is full of opinionated controversy that can put a negative thought on your mind, based on just what you heard/saw. For example in Micheal Wesch’s video on how to stop hating “Life is a game of distinction, separating ourselves from others.” Following that statement, I believe assumptions may be the complete opposite of someone’s true situation, and that a single story should be something of the past.

I recently interview another student in my English class to try and break my single story perspective. I thought she was a shy person and didn’t want to talk with anyone, after our interview, I found out we have more in common than I would have assumed. I found out we both enjoy playing guitar and watching similar movies, we also went to the same middle school. My eyes were opened just by getting to know one person, I had never realized that we have spent many years doing similar things.

As I realized how much a single story mindset can affect just one person, I realized how many other things are based purely on assumptions and opinions. Adichie, a powerful writer, spoke during a ted talk about her own experiences with single stories, “It had not occurred to me that anybody in his family could actually make something. All I had heard about them was how poor they were so that it had become impossible for me to see them as anything else but poor. Their poverty was my single story of them.” I found this ironic as her whole adult life she has been biased on perspective, but thinking back to her youth, she realizes she too looked at people from a single story. We all seem to say that we are biased, but most of us are opinionated without even knowing, media and society project many single-story mindsets by pushing negativity onto a certain subject or person. This happens all over the world, each pushing its own perspective onto you without even realizing it.

I started to wonder about my own single stories and if I view people differently without noticing. I think we are all guilty of this but I wanted to know specifically how I could improve on them. I noticed the smaller things in my lifestyle that I judged, I would assume people with lower numbers on their jersey seemed weaker just by their number while at my hockey games. I also judged the players on their height, thinking they were slow because they were short. The short guy ended up being the fastest on their team, which was very ironic since I judged him without seeing his ability.

I’m still learning my lesson and hope others will catch on as well, it may only make a small change on single story perspectives in the world, but it is a start well needed.

70% of toxic waste is from E-waste

Canada is shipping 116,000 tons of e-waste to other countries.

Where does all our garbage go? Why does the hard work of the less fortunate end up in the upper classes’ hands? Canada produces 31 million tonnes of garbage per year.

Canada produces the most waste per capita than any other country in the world. Prior to 2019, Canada had shipped about half of its recycling exports to China, which holds 45% of imported waste. Most of the plastic was burned. Not only is Canada exploiting their waste and shipping it to other countries, but America also does this process too. American recycling brokers will buy mass amounts of Canada’s waste and plastic, to then sell it to continents like Asia.

According to the Government of Canada, a news release from 2021 stated “The Government has a comprehensive plan to achieve zero plastic waste by 2030, including a proposed ban on certain harmful single-use plastics.” The Canadian government is planning with the provinces and territories trying to work on their plastic waste problem. The government knows this is a serious issue and they have ideas to cut back on their waste. Canada’s plan so far is to bring the shipping containers filled with trash to a waste-to-energy facility near Vancouver. The environment ministers also approved the “Canada-wide action plan” which is a plastic waste control plan which focuses on product design, single-use plastics, and more recycling depots.

According to Mia Rabson, who wrote an article on Canada’s waste for global news, “The Canadian trash was illegally shipped to the Southeast Asian nation in 2013 and 2014 — falsely labeled as plastics for recycling — and the two countries fought for years over whose job it was to get rid of it.” As Canada tries their new way to get rid of waste and plastic, they face heavy backlash from not dealing with the problem earlier. The only way Canada was caught doing this before it got even worse is because the president of the Philippines called out the ambassador of Ottawa, exposing what Canada was doing until the government finally took back some trash. That started a big movement from the people of Canada who were upset with their government.

A lot of the waste shipped to other countries was e-waste, electronic waste is the fastest-growing form of waste globally. Nowadays, we’re all surrounded by electronics such as phones, laptops, and headphones, but we don’t think of the impact all these mass-produced materials make. They are filled with very toxic substances like lead and mercury. These are harmful materials and substances, getting moved by millions of tons into other countries. Finn becket, a writer for Globus Warwick had this to say on the growing e-waste problem. “80% of e-waste produced in developed nations, who produce the most waste, is exported to developing nations”

As the world gets more populated and tech-based by the day, it’s up to everyone to help slow down this mass waste that is produced. This is not just Canada’s problem or Apples; it is all of ours and our job now is to fight to make our earth cleaner.

Empathy & Epathy

This is my project on empathy, I touched on four quotes and explained my thinking on each. From world problems to social media, and family problems. I explained what i gathered from these.

The Internet Is Awesome

In The Woods – Cole McDonell

  1. What adaptations allow them to survive in their environment? List several structures and explain how the structure allows the organism to survive and thrive in its environment. You will need to do some research.

The black Slug survives and thrives in British Columbia due to our great soil and grass as that is their main food source. Although thought to be shell-less snails, Arion ater do have disc-type shells embedded in their mantle. This is surrounded by a fleshy oval tissue on their back. Slugs move about via afoot that, when flexed, allows the slug to control its movement. Their dark black colour blends them in with the soil and their surroundings.

  1. Where is the original (native) habitat of this species located?

Native to Europe, Asia, and North America. The European variety is particularly aggressive and it is likely that the invasive varieties are cultivars that were crossbred for fast growth.

  1. How was this species first introduced into foreign habitats?

European travelers when coming to North America

  1. Provide at least one reason for why this species has flourished in its new habitat.

It is a very aggressive plant and takes over areas easily.

  1. Provide some detail as to how this species is causing ecological harm in its introduced habitat.

Reed canary is a major threat to natural wetlands. It out-competes most native species. One of the first plants to sprout in spring. It forms large, single-species stands, with which other species cannot compete.

List two methods used to try to control this invasive species.

Cutting and pulling the roots out of the plant. other methods are poising the soil but that damages the plants near it
