The Ride

The wall of heat hit my legs as I turned the key in the ignition. The slight tremble beneath me from the engine that was warming up sent a thrill through my skin making me realize what has just begun.

The summer’s day was just under way; the sound of the trees swaying side by side gave the feeling of relaxation. I thought it was just going to be another day at my cabin until I heard this roar of an engine pull up in front of the fence. It was my friend Ben; he hopped off what looked to be one of the most beautiful ATVs I had ever laid my eyes upon.

“Hey, you want to go for a ride?” he said.

His dad had just bought a few new ATVs and I couldn’t resist but agreeing to go with him. Before I knew it, we were on our way out of town headed up even further into the mountains. The scenery was beautiful and I recognized most of the backroads that we were taking at first; but once we started going deeper in the mountains I just let the trails take me where they wanted me to go. I could smell the odor of the ground beneath me still saturated from the rain we had the night before. The trails looked more and more like Krazy straws by the minute. I felt the blood rushing through me as my finger shifted against the throttle. The amount of dust that was thrown upwards from Ben in front of me was insane. The dirt on my face resembled a goatee.

“Wait, what is that up ahead?” he said.

We came to a screeching halt; I couldn’t believe my eyes. There was a truck that was flipped over onto its roof and everything that was in the bed of the truck was scattered across the pothole filled road. It seemed to of just happened because the man who was driving was still shaken up standing beside his truck. We debated whether or not we should stay because there were already other people helping him that had also come across the accident before us, so we decided to head on our way and continue to our destination.

By that time, I had tasted my fair share off fly’s that had flown into my mouth and I wanted to taste something else for once; but we were almost at the lake so I was looking forward to having lunch. I hadn’t been to this specific lake yet, so I wondered what it was going to be like. As we approached the final stretch of the trail I noticed that we weren’t going to be the only ones there. There was another group of people, probably four or five. They weren’t there long though, by the time we had killed the engines and hopped off they were starting theirs to take off. The lake wasn’t really what I had imagined, I thought it would have been a little nicer but it was a nice view for sure.  The water was still, there was about a dozen leap pads that were around the edge of the water. Trees as tall as tall as a house outlined the lake making me realize how beautiful this spot really was then we left the lake and continued onto our journey.

“Hey, can we make a stop at the old mine?” Ben said.

We took a slight detour on our way back, making our way over the to the mine through overgrown trees that were crowding the trail. We finally made it to the old mine and it was a lot bigger than I had remembered, I hadn’t been there for about a year but I guess my memory was a bit off. The mountain was just one giant piece of coal. It was an open mine and had been closed for many years. We walked around a bit at the base of the mountain and I noticed that there were shell casings scattered along the ground. We finished up at the mine and went on our way. I hadn’t felt such excitement in a long time flying down those trails at such high speeds. I loved the feeling of the ground beneath me shake and the sight of dust in the air ahead of me; I loved the feeling of danger and how I could wreck instantly because I was the one in control of that moment and I loved every second of it. We got back to my cabin and my mom laughed at me because of how dirty I was, but every spec of dirt that was on me symbolized pure joy. I cherished the heat on my legs and the adventure we took.

Two things i did well while writing this essay are my details and my dialogue, two things i could improve on is my grammar and only including necessary points.
