G4G

GIVE4GOOD is a club that helps our local community in many ways. They have been working on several projects such as ordering and filling backpacks for individuals who are unhoused with a winter survival theme. Those backpacks included several basic daily essentials, winter gloves, socks, hats, gift card, Christmas gifts, and some munchies. The G4G club also made cards with uplifting and inspirational messages that were also included in the bag.

Through this, all the group members have enjoyed helping others and have developed stronger bonds with getting to know one another. “I think there is a power in numbers! By creating a club of more than 30 students, we were able to execute plans quickly and efficiently with all the helping hands. I also love to hear the ideas of other and their input on initiatives; different perspectives help develop the plans to be the best!” says Brianna Brill in grade 12. With the help of funding through the POCO FOUNDATION they have been able to help fund their initiatives.  They have also made food packages with the help of the Riverside’s Culinary Class which they personally delivered to individuals who are unhoused in Port Coquitlam. On top of this the students made and sewed multiple quilts made from upcycling materials collected from our Riverside community which were also given to locals in our area who were in need. “I like helping others because I know that I have made a difference in somebody’s life at least once. Why not give others what you can spare.” Says Kiera VanVeen also in grade 12. This Spring the club will continue to work on a project called “New Beginnings Backpacks” which collects food for children in need in our community as well as helping the local “KidSport” organization so that every child has the opportunity to play sports even if they can’t afford it. A focus will be on “Project Hello” which will be to make cards and then having our students head to the streets with the teachers and inviting people who are unhoused to write messages of love in the cards and giving them away to family or friends they have lost touch with. The club will also be making “Spring Survival” packages for the unhoused. This club has been putting in a lot of effort and through it all has helped many individuals in our community.

What We’ve Accomplished This Year

–  Made 40 winter care packages for the unhoused on 3030 Gordon Street. The care packages were put into backpacks; the backpacks included several essentials such as winter gloves, socks, hats, a gift card, Christmas gifts, a food gift card, and some snacks. The Give4Good Club also made cards with uplifting and inspirational messages that were also included in the bags.

– Made food packages with the help of the Riverside’s Culinary Class which we personally delivered to individuals who are unhoused in Port Coquitlam.

– Our club made and sewed two quilts, which were made from upcycling materials collected from our Riverside community. We washed, ironed, and cut out the material to make quilts were also given to locals in our area who are in need.

– Made 20 backpacks for our “New Beginning Backpacks” initiative which provides food and Subway gift cards in backpacks for children at a local elementary school that are in need.

– Held a fundraiser for KidSport and also held a week long sports equipment collection event and collected new/gently used equipment for KidSport. In addition, our club helped out organizing and selling equipment at the KidSport fundraiser held at Riverside Secondary so that every child has the opportunity to play sports, even if they can’t afford it.

– Made 20 Spring care packages for the unhoused on 3030 Gordon Street. Some items in the care packages included sunglasses, sunscreen, a ball cap, a $40 Superstore gift card, essential toiletries, and snacks.

– We are currently working on “Project Hello.” We have sent cards to a local elementary school for the students to draw and paint, and then Give4Good students and the teachers spoke to residents at 3030 Gordon Street. The Give4Good Club invited people who are unhoused to write messages of love in the cards and give them away to family or friends they have lost touch with. The Give4Good Club is now working on finding the unhoused loved ones through searching social media. We strive to reconnect the unhoused with their family and friends.
