A Place at the Table- Response

  1. What are two examples of food insecurity identified in this movie? What were some of the ways in which the individuals involved coped with their predicament? Were they successful? Why or why not?

People living in food deserts; places where there is a lack of fresh and affordable food. Those who do not have the means or money to afford nutritious food or do not know where their next meal might come from. Many of the people facing food insecurity got food stamps or went to places that provided free food. Also, some of the women in the video started a group that went around the country trying to evoke change, when it came to the hunger crisis in America. They were successful because they got people talking about this very important issue, but they didn’t completely eradicate the problem of hunger in America.

  1. What specific demographics in our country might be more at risk of experiencing food insecurity? Why are they more at risk? Is there anything historical that might have caused this increased risk?

Single parent house holds are at higher risk of experiencing food insecurity because they only have one or even no income to support their whole family. They also may have to find child care for their children which cost additional money.

  1. What is your personal reaction to this movie? Did you have any preexisting ideas about food insecurity? Were you surprised by some of the information that was presented? Why or why not?

When I think about hunger, I usually think about the homeless population, especially in the down town area. I always pictured it very black and white as people rather having food or not, I’d never thought a lot about people who have food but not enough to live comfortably. I was really surprised when they were talking about how far they had to travel to get to a fully stocked grocery store, I can’t imagine not having somewhere nearby to get fresh fruits and vegetables from, or not having the means to get to one.

  1. If you were in a position to directly or indirectly influence the issue at hand (such as a politician or policy maker) what would you do to help? What policies do you think could aid those that are hungry? ORWhat is a way that you could make a difference today? How would you go about making that difference and change?

I think more funding should go towards school programs to make sure the food is nutritious and will sustain the students throughout the day.  I also think that giving people higher wages would help because a lot of the families with food insecurities had working parents, they just aren’t paid enough to purchase adequate food for their family.
