An Analysis of Netflix
Netflix is a popular, online streaming service where members can watch movies and television shows whenever they want without any commercials. It all started in 1997 in Scott Valley, California by two American entrepreneurs, Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph when they came up with the idea of renting DVDs to consumers and then tested this idea by sending each other DVDs. Then in 1998, they launched it out to the public by creating a website called Netflix.com where you could rent DVDs. However, in 1999 instead of renting DVDs it became a subscription-based, “offering members unlimited DVD rentals without due dates, late fees, or monthly rental limits” (Netflix). Still to this day, Netflix remains a subscription-based service and it is how to make in income. Netflix slowly grew in popularity but remained the same until 2007 when they introduced streaming, members could then watch their favourite shows and movies from the comforts of their homes. From there Netflix grew and grew in popularity, “Netflix then expended beyond the United States by offering the streaming-only plan in Canada in 2010” (William). In 2016 Netflix expanded to 130 countries now available almost everywhere. Ever since Netflix has been nominated and won thirty 37 Emmy Awards from 128. Netflix also has over 100 million members globally, at first it was meant for 16-34 year-olds however, now they have movies and shows for kids so respectively they changed it to 12+ but still younger audiences still watch Netflix, also each show and movie has their own individual age recommendations. So now everyone can watch ‘Netflix and chill’ which is an internet slang that means to watch Netflix and end with sexual activity or maybe just “Netflastinate, which is when you use Netflix to procrastinate” (McCluskey 2017).  Netflix is a popular, online streaming service that everyone watches on the weekend, it has gone through ups and downs but at the end of the day, Netflix is still an amazing form of media that some people couldn’t live without.
