My Project

Original Photo

How you figured out what equations to use.

My image had many linear lines in it, like on the Wands and Crowns. I I worked on those first because I find linear lines easiest to do. Once I finished them, I started to place my 10 types of function: Absolute Value, Polynomial, Rational, Radical, Trigonometric, Exponential, Logarithmic, Sideways Parabolas, Semicircles, and Ellipses. Knowing that I had at least one of each function, I worked on all the other lines.

It was mostly trial and error, while trying to figure out which type of line would fit the best. My choices didn’t always work the first time so I moved to a different function.

Did you have any challenges?

I had troubles at the start, trying to figure out how to fill in with colour. I have a few functions which the X and Y are switched. So when filling in these ones I would have to fill using x and not y. But it took me a while to understand why the area was not filling.

Any aha moments?

When I was about half way finished, Julia and Alexandra told me that I wasn’t doing my whole project right. They explained to me that I wasn’t writing my functions properly. I was writing them like

j1=(x-1)   And   j2=1/2(x-1)^2

But they said that I was actually supposed to write base functions and transform those. Like:

A1=x    A2=x^2
j1(x)=A1(x-1)
j2(x)=1/2A2(x-1)

After finding this out, I went through all of my functions and changed them, which was easy, but took me a while to do.

Did you get help?

I had lots of help from Julia. We worked on our projects together a couple of times. But she really helped me by pointing out that I should be writing my functions in expanded form, because I had been writing in standard form. This was the best thing that she said to me because I would have really struggled through the whole project if I was writing in standard form.

Did you use any strategies?

Whenever I finished a section of the photo, I would fill it in with colour, as a way to show myself how much I have accomplished. This helped me to be more motivated, since there were many times when I didn’t want to work on the project. But by just filling in a section, it made me feel like I was make progress.

How did this assignment help you understand more about transformations of functions and relations?

Working on this project really helped me to understand how even the smallest of transformations make all the difference. It also helped me as a way to practice and study for my Pre-Clac 12 Final.

In the Woods Adaptation Questions

1.What adaptations allow them to survive in their environment? List several structures and explain how the structure allows the organism to survive and thrive in its environment. You will need to do some research.

Roly-Poly bugs, also known as Armadillidium vulgare, have an exoskeleton with plates, which are used as a layer of protection. Roly-Poly bugs also use odor to defend themselves. Armadillidium vulgare are cold-blooded and sensitive to light, humidity, and quick temperature changes. They can die if left out in the sun too long. They prefer dark and moist areas.

Questions:

1. Where is the original (native) habitat of this species located?

The canary reed grass, originated in Europe, Asia, and North America.

2. How was this species first introduced into foreign habitats?

The grass was planted widely for forage and erosion control. It also spreads easily.

3. Provide at least one reason for why this species has flourished in its new habitat.

The canary reed does well in wet habitats like stream banks.

4. Provide some detail as to how this species is causing ecological harm in its introduced habitat.

The plant displaces native wetland species and can also increase flooding by clogging waterways. Reed Canary grass is invasive to native grasses that they out-compete in only 5 to 6 months of introduction.

5. List two methods used to try to control this invasive species.

The reed canary grass can be dug up, getting the root system out of the ground to prevent resprouting. Another way is if you have a big group of the grass you can burn the plant, this technique may need a few annual burnings before it becomes more controlled.

What I Learned About Grade 9 Linear Relations

What is a Linear Relation?

A linear Relation is a pattern that goes up or down by the same amount every time.

How to Find the Rule for a Pattern?

When trying to find the rule for a pattern you need to look for how much the y list is going up or down by. If it was going up by +4 then it would be multiplied by x, to become 4x=y. But that wouldn’t equal 5. So, to get it to 5 we will have to add +1 to the equation. It should look like this 4x+1=y. now you can use this equation to keep the pattern going.

How to Plot a Point?

When you have numbers on either side of the T-chart you could be able to plot them on a graph. The number under x will determine where the along the x-axes you dot will go. Same for the y, it will determine how high up the dot will be.

How to Graph a Linear Relation?

The coordinates on your t-chart should make a straight line when all placed on a graph.

How to Graph Vertical and horizontal lines?

To create a straight line all you need is a number=x or a number=y. If you want it to go up and down 3 to the right of zero, then you would put 3=x. Same thing would happen with y but it would go across.

Vocabulary:

  • X axes: The horizontal line on a graphing chart
  • Y axes: The vertical line on a graphing chart
  • T-chart: The chart you put your coordinates into to help organize and come up with an equation.
  • Coordinate: The location your plot is on the graph. An example of a coordinate is (2,4)
  • Origin: It is a fixed place on the graph, aka the middle of the graph or (0,0).
  • Plotting: To put your coordinates on a graph
  • Linear pattern: When your coordinates have a pattern going up or down and it looks like a slanted straight line.
  • Increasing pattern: When your pattern goes up
  • Decreasing pattern: When your pattern goes down
  • Horizontal line: The X-axis/the line that goes across
  • Vertical line: The Y-axis/the line that goes up and down
