What is New Media?

New Media is used everyday by everyone in our society, but what is it? New Media is a new form of communication identified by its two-way, interactive communication and by being on-demand and available at anytime on any digital device. There are many forms of new media including blogs, apps, emails, podcasts and more. Media has been around for centuries but it has changed and developed throughout history. Traditional Media includes radio, newspaper, television, books and music. Traditional Media is still used in modern society, along with new media. Even though everyone consumes new media, they all consume it in different ways and forms. This is known as fragmented new media consumption, which means that different forms of media can be consumed from different digital devices. New media is always being used in society, but there are ways to limit our intake and develop healthier ways of consuming new media. We can set time limits on apps or devices, we can look at more educational forms of new media and adapt our daily usage. There are many ways we can personally develop our media intake to be more educational and to limit our time consuming it. Many media forms can be educational, including National Geographic and The New York Times, whereas some forms can be less educational including social media or bias news sites. Taking part in activities and hobbies is another form media can be useful and educational. Everyone uses new media and it can be very useful in our daily life as long as we know how to manage our consumption.

Media has become a very big part of daily life and is used everyday, “In 2017, the average American spent more than 12 hours a day with various media” (John Donovan 2018). Even though everyone consumes new media, everyone consumes it in different ways and forms. This is known as fragmented new media consumption, which means that different forms of media can be consumed from different digital devices. New media is always being used in society, but there are ways to limit our intake and develop healthier ways of consuming new media. One can set time limits on apps or devices, people can look at more educational forms of new media and adapt their daily usage.
