I chose the social responsibility core competency because of my focus on race and mental health throughout this class and in my final project. I have the ability to recognize the way that society treats individuals differently based on their social status. Things like recognizing privilege, accepting those who are struggling, and lending a helping hand are all things one can do to be socially responsible. I feel that ignoring issues such as racism and mental illness only worsens the stigma and the ongoing “othering” that occurs. Instead, addressing and celebrating our differences allows us all the opportunity to grow and improve. A community-based support system focused upon lifting each other up is a great method to achieve more unity in our lives.
