Science App Review

PROBLEM: When I’m doing my science homework in the evening, sometimes I will need help with answering a question. Often a Google search doesn’t answer my specific question.

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS/BRAINSTORM: To solve this problem, I could do a couple of things. I could find a handful of reliable sites, I could use the corrections to help me figure it out, I could go over the questions in class and have them clarified then, or I could ask a classmate for help.

APP: Khan Academy

REVIEW: My first impression is that this app is very user friendly. It has multiple categories under every subject, which is useful since the term “science” is so broad.  Once you select your topic, there are about 15 more sections to choose from. And after that, there are many more sections! I like this design because you can really get the exact information you need. It makes it very easy to learn a lot about whatever you’re studying.  I also enjoy how the lessons are presented: videos. I believe that using videos is a wise format choice because the viewer can go back and re-watch any parts they need more clarity on. Also, videos appeal to a range of learning styles. If you are visual you can watch them, if you learn by doing you can pause the videos and try the practice questions, or if you learn by having things explained to you you can listen!

Overall, I truly didn’t find any “cons” while using Khan Academy. My short experience was completely positive. I would recommend this app to anyone who likes independent learning or anyone who just needs a few more details on something.

WHAT I LEARNED: I learned that the Khan Academy isn’t just a math tutorial YouTube channel. It offers in depth explanations on a variety of subjects.  I honestly think I will use this app in the future!

CONCLUSION: To debrief, my process today was successful. I was able to find an efficient app and figure out how it works, as well as how it could help me in the future.

  1. Khan Academy is a great app for all fields of learning. Before the 9th Grade school year began, I’d downloaded this & many other learning/education related apps to use. I haven’t actually used the app yet, however after reading your review I opened the app to see what it has to offer for Science. It includes the information needed for Units 1 & 2 of the Science 9 curriculum: Chemistry & Electricity. You described the app thoroughly so anyone could understand the app before even using it. From now on I’m going to start using Khan Academy to help me with learning, homework & studying.

  2. You have submitted a very good review. I like how you included all the parts of solution fluency. Screenshots can help tell your story and would be good to include alongside the Khan Academy logo. I appreciate your honest debrief at the end. Make sure you respond to the comments on your blog!
