Week – 11 Factoring with an area model
This week we learned how to factor trinominals that have a coefficient that is not 1 in the 1st term. We have been taught the area module and the guess & test way but Im going to show the area module . In this example we have – 8x + 1 . Step 1 draw a box and divide it into 4 equal sections. Step 2 put the first term in the top left box and the last term in the bottom right. Now on the outside right down the first term multiplied by the last term which = then below it put the middle term. so that you know what numbers to work with. then find 2 numbers that multiply to and add to – 8x. here we can do (-2x) (-6x) so we put them in the two blank spots in the box. then the last thing to do is put the answers you recieve into brackets which would be (2x – 1) and (6x – 1) always put the number in descending order according to the degree of the exponent.
