This week we revisited rational expressions, except this time we looked at adding them.

Once again the rules we follow are very similar to adding fractions, as we will need to find a common denominator.

Here is an example of one with a common denominator:

\frac {4x}{13y} + \frac {15x}{13y}

 

\frac {19x}{13y}

If they don’t have a common denominator, you must then give them one:

\frac {1}{3x} + \frac {5x}{4x^2}

 

\frac {4x(1)}{12x^2} + \frac {3(5x)}{12x^2}

Then add:

\frac {4x}{12x^2} + \frac {15x}{12x^2}

 

\frac {19x}{12x^2}
