WW1 reflection #4 – how would you best describe the treaty of versailles?

The main purpose of the treaty of Versailles was peace negotiations.

The Paris Peace Conference opened on January 18, 1919, with the goal of developing a treaty that would punish Germany and meet the goals of the various Allied Powers. Negotiating the treaty, was a long and complex process.
The Treaty of Versailles was flawed in many ways as it put the complete blame of the War on Germany. Germany was forced to pay heavy reparations, lost its colonies, and forced to reduce its army.

It was a rocky process because:
1) the Allies disagreed on how best to treat Germany; 2) Germany refused to accept the terms of reparations; and 3) Germany’s refusal to accept the war guilt, which led to growing German resentment and nationalism.

The Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, it officially and ultimately ended the war between Germany and the Allied Powers. The controversial War Guilt clause blamed Germany for World War I and imposed heavy debt payments on Germany.

However the treaty failed to create a long-term peace, because they started off bad. They used the war guilt clause on Germany. The Americans opposed the Treaty of Versailles because it was not good for the economy and pulled down all of Europe, which can negatively affect the US too.

  1. Good. The treaty heavily punished Germany and favoured France if you look at the different conditions of it.
