Socials Studies 10 Ignite Presentation (Jerry Potts)

 

 

Slide 1:  his name was Jerry Potts or also known as or Kyi-Yo-Kos which meant Bear Child. He was born in 1840 in Fort McKenzie which is the Mississippi river located in Montana, United States. He developed skills when he lived in Fort McKenzie the skills were tracking and fighting  

Slide 2: his father was Andrew. R. Potts he was an Scottish fur trader and his mother was Namo-pisi, she was a Blood women. Andrew. R. Potts died in 1842 and Namo-pisi moved north of the border with jerry and could handle jerry so she handed Jerry Potts over to Alexander Harvey, an AFC trader

Slide 3:  after Namo-pisi gave Alexander Harvey jerry he abused Jerry for 3 years then abandoning Jerry Potts at the age of 5 years old on the street. Andrew Dawson was the one to find Jerry Potts and adopted him. Another AFC trader Unlike Harvey, Dawson was a kind man.

Slide 4: Andrew Dawson who taught his adopted son to read and write and allowed him to mix with the aboriginal people who came to trade at the fort.  And he also Learned how to speak several aboriginal languages. So, he could communicate with other aboriginal people.

Slide 5: As he was a mixed blood he had to prove to both native and whites that he could cope in their respected cultures by living within whites and natives and learning all there believes, religion, ceremonies, and the style of how they lived    

Slide 6: Jerry Potts is someone that no one messed with because he was trained to kill and do what ever it was protect and do his job. he was part of the metis the jobs he did were buffalo hunter, guides, scouts, interpreters and being crack shot which they were one of the toughest types of men.

Slide 7: Potts worked for the North West Mounted Police for 22 years. He helped choose a spot to build   Fort Macleod and arranged for Colonel Macleod to meet with Blackfoot leaders such as Crowfoot and Red Crow.

Slide 8: Potts was an interpreter for the treaty commission during the Treaty 7 talks of 1877 he was famous among Blackfoot, known as a great warrior and hunter. He educated each group and ensured friendly relations. Assured his people remained neutral during NW rebellion.

Slide 9: Potts contributed to the friendly relations that quickly developed between the NWMP and the Blackfoot Indians by explaining to each the customs, etiquette, and concerns of the other, and by acting as interpreter. Which established the RCMP.

Slide 10: Influence helped get treaty 7 signed. Treaty 7 was an agreement between Queen Victoria and mainly Blackfoot, First Nation band governments in what is today the southern portion of Alberta. It was concluded on September 22, 1877.

Slide 11: Named a street after him the street name is jerry Potts boulevard in Fort Macleod in honor of where he died and as the country became settled there was less need for his frontier skills. He nevertheless remained with the force until his death in 1896.

Slide 12: they Named a school after him and it was called Jerry Potts elementary located in Calgary Alberta on 3720 42 St. this was build in honor of him for all the different native groups that he educated
