It is not easy to be a father of a family in the world. Every man has different responsibilities to take care of. Some men work to improve their family, some look for other ways to take care of their family depending on their culture. The novel, “The Pearl,” is written about the stark differences between cultures and how money changes the life of a father trying to improve his family’s life. The main character, Kino always tries to do his best for his family, thinks carefully and says the final word. Sometimes he takes risks, even if he makes mistakes, he always tries to improve his family. Although many terrible things happen to his family, Kino is a good father and husband because no matter what happens, he always cares for his family and tries to do what he believes is best for them. Kino clearly loves his family, tries to improve their lifes and protect them with a gun which is more effective than his senses.
Kino and Juana’s family values are nurturing and loving because they are based on a mutual respect and love for each other. Coyotito is their only child. They care for him as much as they care for their lifes. The pearl that Kino found was big and all the native people thought it was worth a lot of money. He realizes that he can do much for his family with the money from the pearl. He wants to marry Juana in a beautiful church, he always dreams on that. That’s why they are praying to find a pearl. Kino finds a pearl and finally marries her like in his dreams. He cares for Juana so much that he wants to hand their wedding in papers. Kino is a thoughtful father and husband that he plans educating Coyotito. He says, “My son will read and open books, and my son will write and will know writing. And my son will make the numbers, and these things will make us free because he will know then we will know.” Kino is trying to say if a member is educated, he or she can educate other people around them, too. He is so intelligent that he is dreaming this for his family and his friends, so everyone will gain advantage from the pearl. His third request is buying a gun to protect his family. They will have much money and they were attacked before because of the pearl, so he can keep his family safe and be comfortable for them. Kino plans everything after he finds the pearl. Coyotito will go to school and learn how to read and write. Kino and Juana will marry in a beautiful church and make certain of their love. Kino will be more careful for his family, because they are not poor anymore and they will be attacked. Kino will buy a gun to protect theirselves better.
Kino is a good protector and father. He wants to create a better life for his family with the pearl but someone tries to steal it or damage his family three separate times because of the songs of the evil of the pearl. But Kino’s keen senses and hunting skills helped him to keep his family safe. He doesn’t have a gun to protect his family. That’s why he will buy a gun, after he sells the pearl. Firstly the doctor takes a look at Coyotito and says “The poison is holed-up on the inside with blueprints and planning a second attack just as soon as it gets its beauty rest.” Then he gives Coyotito a mysterious capsule, which we speculate contains poison. After the doctor hears that Kino has a pearl, he decides to go to Kino’s house to take a look for Coyotito. Then he sees Coyotito is healthy, he gives a poison to Coyotito to get him worse, so he can earn more money from Kino. The doctor asks Kino when he will be able to pay him. Kino says, “As soon as I sell my pearl,” and the doctor is, “Ooh, you have a pearl? Really? Tell me more about this mysterious object that, before this very moment, I have not heard or mention of whatsoever. Also, I’ll ‘hold’ it for you in my safe.” But Kino knows that the doctor is lying, he has already heard Kino has a pearl, he will try to get the pearl, when the doctor goes outside, Kino wraps up and hides the pearl. Here, the doctor is trying to steal the pearl like everyone who is Kino’s enemy. One night, Juana tries to throw the pearl to the sea but Kino sees her and beats her. Then while they are going home, Kino is attacked. But Kino’s hunting skills helps himself and kills the dark stranger who attacked Kino. Now Juana agrees Kino to sell the pearl because their life has already changed, they can’t come back to their old life. Now, there is only one way for them to follow, they have to sell the pearl and create a new life. They need money to pay for the doctor, to buy a new canoe or get a new job for Kino. Kino has never thought the bad side of their road, he always chooses to look good side, his perspective always shows the good side.
While Steinback was writing “The Pearl”, he had always referred that Kino cares and loves his family. Steinback created Kino’s character which is thoughtful and observant of Juana’s actions and reactions that most of the time he thinks before he speaks or comments on a situation. They don’t have many conversations but they understand each other. In the book, Juana talks the most and Kino chooses his words carefully not to make mistake, decides what to do and not to damage his family. After a scorpion stings his son, he feels completely helpless like the writer says, “Kino hovered; he was helpless, he was in the way.” Because he is thinking about how he has no money and no credibility for paying a doctor. Even he knows that his son needs medical help and a doctor costs so much money, he chooses to try, goes to the doctor but everything happens like he thinks. He doesn’t give up and tries to find a pearl to pay for the doctor. That’s the only resort they can do. Then he manages to find a pearl. He was almost dying while he was in the water but everything was for his son. Kino proves he is a good husband when he does what Juana wanted to do in the first place. Juana always thinks that the pearl is evil and it damages her family and wants to throw it to the sea. She tries to get rid of the pearl, but Kino doesn’t let her throw it to the sea and beats her. He is thinks that they still have a chance to improve his family. However, when Kino finally gets rid of the pearl, there is no more bad thing and bad luck. Even he makes mistakes, he tries and takes risks for his family. At the beginning of the book, Kino is worried because he doesn’t want to lose his son. When Juana said “We need to go to a doctor,” he is ready to do everything for his son, he can even give his life to him. Then Kino did not listen to Juana when she wants to get rid of the pearl, he risks his life to have the best for his family. He loves his family more than he loves himself.
Kino and Juana’s family communicate lovely because they are based on mutual respect and love for each other. Coyotito is their only child, they care for him as much as they care for their life. Kino is a good protector and father that he always wants to do his best and create a better life for his family with the pearl but his family is attacked and damaged because of the songs of the evil of the pearl. But Kino’s keen senses and hunting skills helps him to keep his family safe as he can. While Steinback was writing “The Pearl”, he had always referred that Kino cares and loves his family so much. Steinback clearly shows us that Kino is a good husband and father with his love to Juana and Coyotito.
