IT 10 – Scratch Movie Scene Project

https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/145717014/

While creating this project, I learned about hiding/showing sprites accordingly to how and where you want them to be.

A challenging aspect for me during this project was making the shooting animations and getting the sprites to move around like I wanted them to.

I think my project was unique because it combined a few different scenes from the James Bond movies over the years.

IT 10 – Scratch Game Project

Controls:

Left = Left Arrow Key
Right = Right Arrow Keys

Objective: Stop all the balls from getting past you to the blue area. Catch them while you can.

During this project, I learned a lot about the general concept of coding with Scratch, and learning to think ahead and build all the scripts to work with one another.

One of the most challenging things of this project was getting the scripts to work together. A lot of the time when you added something new in, other things would stop working, or not work like they were supposed to. It was difficult to problem solve and get them all to work together.

Gene Mutation Story (Amyotropic Lateral Sclerosis – ALS) – Science 9/COL

Part 1

I was once a gene. Living the gene life. It was great. I just got to sit back, relax, and make protein molecules. I had a nice home. Lived in a great chromosomal neighborhood. To be specific, I lived in Chromosome 9p21.2. We genes are pretty tight within each other, you know. There wasn’t much else to do, it was a pretty slow life. Everyone in the chromosome knew everyone. All 25,000 of us. It’s crazy when you think about it.

All was going well, until one day. Me and my gene neighbor noticed that there was an extra gene that appeared. It was like he came out of nowhere, we didn’t know what happened. We didn’t know who he was but we knew he wasn’t supposed to be there.

For a while, me and all the other genes didn’t talk to him. He was different. None of the genes here were exactly the same, but we were alike in some ways, but this gene. He was was off.

None of the genes knew this at the time, but there were serious health implications to their human host.

The exact cause of ALS is unknown, but we know it is caused by a mutated gene adding, changing or deleting nucleotides, resulting in the production of a protein with altered or reduced function. The affect of this on the human host may include muscle spasticity and weakness, affecting movement in your body, causing difficulty chewing, swallowing, and breathing. Also causing slurred speech.

Part 2

In order to research this subject, I needed to search more in depth about genes and genetic mutation, to understand more regarding how a mutation is caused and what implications it may have. After that I researched about ALS from a general perspective, and started reading from several articles that proved to be credible, and only using published scientific documents through a university or research foundation. Within those articles I was able to find specific information about genetic mutation linked with ALS. Resources I used to get started with this process were Google Scholar and the Google search engine.

Although I had some trouble getting started with the process, overall I think the process went well, and I was able to complete the assignment and get all the information necessary that I needed.

Science App Review – ADL 16

Problem to Solve: To find a fun, easy, interactive and informative digital solution to learning about the periodic table.

Solutions to Solve the Problem: Possibly using internet websites and online science games to engage students in the activity. Find an app or program doing the same on a mobile device for ease of use.

Chemistry, and the periodic table, is a very complex subject that many students struggle to comprehend. I think that using technology would be an alternative and fun solution for students to interact with the material and would help them visualize what is going on.

To help with that, I found an app called the “Periodic Table” by JQ Soft. It features an interactive periodic table that gives more understandable, in depth information about elements, and much more.

App Review

When I first opened the app, I was impressed with the colourful charts, and the organized layout of the app. I was able to easily navigate around without getting lost in piles of un-comprehensible information. This app is completely free on the Google Play Store.

When you first launch the app, it opens up a large, colour-coded periodic table, dividing the elements into their respective groups. One of the most helpful features of this app is that if you click on any of the elements on the table, it will open up a page of all the information on that element, including pictures and diagrams. It gives all the information regarding it’s name, year it was discovered, Atomic Properties, Thermodynamic Properties, Material Properties, Electromagnetic Properties, Reactivity and Nuclear Properties. It gives in point form all the information about that element in a simple, easy and understandable fashion.

Those are the basic features of the app, and it has a lot more to offer, such as a Solubility Chart and a Molar Mass Calculator. The problem is that all those features are locked until you purchase Pro Access. To unlock these features, it will cost you $4.99 CAD. To me, this is a problem and an annoyance. It interferes with the use of the app, and makes it hard to do everything you need to do without having to pay.

Another aspect that proved to be a problem was the ads. About 15 seconds after first launching the app, there was a pop up ad for something that had nothing to do with Science. This would be quite an annoyance if you are trying to do work with this app and this keeps interfering. Again, to be free of these ads you are required to pay $4.99 to unlock Pro Access.

Pros:

  •  Easy to use
  • Informative
  • Interactive

Cons:

  • Full potential of the app is locked unless you pay
  • Ads interfere with use of the app

Overall, I think this is a great app for chemistry students to use, allowing them quick and easy access to helpful information. Regardless of the problems with ads and some locked features, I still found this app quite useful. The advanced features of the app would be of great help as well, if you don’t mind paying a little bit of money.

Individual Project Write-up

Overall, I think the project went well. Everything went smoothly, and there were no major problems. Everything went mostly as expected, except for a minor problem with the model creation, and an alternative had to be used.

I think that the work was divided equally and me and my partner were able to plan the project with ease.
