Passion Project Reflection November

What are some things you have learned and/or tasks you have accomplished this month?

This month, I have deeply expanded my knowledge of both lighting and sound in the theatre environment. Previously, I had no experience with the X32 Digital Mixer, so I thought it was important for me to figure it out. I learned key things, like navigating the Routing Menu, editing Channel Strip LCDS, using Busses, Matrix Mixs, Mute Groups, and DCA groups. Even though I learned these things at Evergreen, I put them into use during Riverside’s own Festival of Short Shorts.

Lighting wise, I delved deeper into more complicated aspects of controlling the Ion, such as Patching multiple Dimmers to correct circuit, Patching by Address, and Dimmer Doubling. Having installed some Movers for Red Rock Diner, I was taught how to operate them properly and safety. I was shown the controls for these, and explained the use of each one.

The most important thing I learned regarding the Ion was the ability to create Effects. Effects are very useful, as they allow for the rapid change and movement of lights that you can pre-program. This is create to use in firework scenes, or in a dance club. Generally things with lots of flashing lights and colour.

What aspects of your passion project are working? Explain why.

Honestly, my Passion Project has been going exceedingly well. I’ve learned so much, and more importantly, I’ve been able to implement these new tools into Riverside and its productions. I think that is the key in all this; not only learning new things, but having the ability and chance to use them.

What aspects of your passion project are challenging? Explain why.

Even though I was given the dates for the opportunities to volunteer ahead of time, I  missed a couple events due to unforeseen activities popping up a couple days before. These activities were family related, and could not be missed. This frustrates me as I was looking forward to going to Evergreen and learning more.

What steps did you take to overcome these challenges / what adjustments did you need to make?

Unfortunately, sometimes challenges cannot be overcome. However, you can try your best to do so. I will continue to inform my family of the dates I have been asked to volunteer, as well as keep track of them myself.

Is there anything you can do improve? (with your approach to the project, or altering the project)

Nope, I think the way I am going about this is fine.

What is the next step, when will it be completed.

The next step? Head back to Evergreen. In the coming months I’ll try to be there as much as possible.
