Week 6 – The Quadratic Formula

The quadratic formula is as follows:

This formula is one of three essential ways you can solve a quadratic equation (the other two being factoring and completing the square). Using the quadratic formula is most often the second most preferable method to solve a quadratic equation second only to factoring. The first step to solving using the quadratic formula is identifying the values a, b, and c. If you were to substitute these values for a, b, and c, within the original equation, it would most likely resemble ax^2+bx+c=0 this is how you can be sure of the values of your substituting variables. Next you simply use the formula as you would any other formula and solve for x, it’s a matter of “plugging in” values and solving.
