Analysis project “LinkedIn”
LinkedIn is an American business and employment-oriented online service that operates via websites and mobile apps. Launched on May 5th, 2003, it is “to seek out jobs and have users colleagues and mentors leave recommendations to bolster their credibility” including employers posting jobs and job seekers pasting their CVs. (Johnson 2019) As of 2015 most of the company’s revenue came from selling access to information about its members to recruiters and sales professionals. Since December 2016 it has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of Microsoft. As of May 2020, LinkedIn had 706 million registered members in 105 countries.
Founded in Mountain View, California, LinkedIn is currently headquartered in San Francisco, California, with 33 global offices in Los Angeles, New York, Washington DC, Sao Paulo, London, Dublin, Amsterdam, Graz, Milan, Paris, Munich, Madrid, Stockholm, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Japan, Australia, Canada, India, and Dubi. In May 2020, the company had around 20,500 employees. LinkedIn’s CEO is Ryan Rozanski. Jeff Weiner, previously CEO of LinkedIn, is now the Executive Chairman. Reid Hoffman, the founder of LinkedIn Is now chairman of the Board. It is funded by Sequoia Capital, Greylock, Brain Capital Ventures, Bessemer Venture Partners, and the European fund. LinkedIn reached profitability in March 2006. Through January 2011 the company had received a total of $103 million investment. The site has an Alexa Internet ranking as the 57th most popular website. Based in the Unites, “the site is, as of 2013 available in 24 different languages”, LinkedIn filed for a national public offering in January 2011 and traded its first shares on May 19th, 2011 under the NYSE symbol “LNKD.” (Hutchinson 2019)
History
“The company was founded in December 2002 by Reid Hoffman” and founding team members from PayPal and socialnet.com. in late 2003, Sequoia Capital led the Series A investment in the company (Gregersen 2007). In August 2004, LinkedIn reached 1 million users. In March 2006, LinkedIn achieved its first-month profitability.
In June 2008, Sequoia Capital, Greylock Partners, and other venture capital firms purchased a 5% stake in the company for $53 million, giving the company a post-money valuation of approximately $1 billion. In November 2009, LinkedIn opened its office in Mumbai, and soon thereafter in Sydney, It started it’s an Asia-Pacific team expansion. In 2010, LinkedIn opened an International Headquarters in Dublin, Ireland, received a $20 million investment from Tiger Global Management LLC at a valuation of approximately $2 billion, announced its first acquisition, Mspoke, and improved its 1% premium subscription ratio. IN October of the year, Silicon Valley Insider ranked the company no. 10 on its Top 100 List if most valuable start-ups. By December, the company was valued at $1.575 billion in privet markets.
