Factoring “ugly trinomials”

This method is for when the sum of the 2nd term and the product of the 3rd arent made with the same factors.


2x^2 + 7x + 6

  1. look at the factors of the first and third term

2x^2= 2x multiplied by x

6      = 2 multiplied by 3

now put the factors into a expression.

HINT: you cannot put numbers beside each other if they have something in common

so the only possible expression would be

(2x + 3) (x+2)

You can check if the answer is correct by using distributive property and seeing if you get the trinomial you started with.
