During this first week of IT 10, we had a challenge of making a playable, yet fun game within 5 days. Then we would compare and play each others games. Even though I have used the Scratch program during my middle school years, I learned some new things during this fun assignment. Our teacher taught us a few basic arrangements for the coding blocks on how to manipulate the “sprites”, make cool animations, keep track of the score and much more. What I ended up with was this game: Planet Shooter. The main purpose of this game is to attain a certain score (200). To achieve that score, the player must control the blaster ship and shoot at the moving planets and UFO’s. Making this game was not a very difficult task. I made up lots of moving targets (to shoot at) , a laser sprite, the player (blaster ship) sprite, 3 backdrops (for the menus) and a “Game Over” sprite. Coding these sprites were a little bit tricky at first, however, the experience improved after a while. The planets needed to bounce back and forth around the screen, the laser needed to shoot and follow the blaster ship, the blaster ship needed to be operated by the player using only the arrow keys, score had to be kept and the menus had to appear at the right times. Overall, I would think that this was a terrific experience and would definitely attempt to make other games on Scratch again.
