The story about a woman called Miss Brill was filled with its up and downs and gave us a lot of hints as to what kind of person she is. Personally, I found the story hard to understand, but after the class discussion I am able to comprehend the story more than before. This story has a deeper meaning than one would think, and after further discussion I realized that this story has more to tell than just the personality of Miss Brill. In the discussion in class, many pointed out the fact that Miss Brill is lonely, as woman her age should be married or successful, unfortunately Miss Brill is neither, and is rather lonely. However, she does have her moments of happiness for example she pretends she’s an actress in a play and that “she had a part and came every Sunday. No doubt somebody would have noticed if she hadn’t been there”. She likes being included, it part of the human behavior, no one likes to be excluded, and we all want attention, some might want more than others but it’s a horrible thing to feel rejected which isn’t right. We should not be like the people in the story who mocked, and rejected Miss Brill, but be accepting and help those around us feel as comfortable as possible as today’s world can be cruel and we must do what we can to prevent that.
