Design Thinking

Topic: discrimination against immigrants

A) Our process:

We started out by gathering materials we all thought might be useful. We then shared our visions for the project and thought of ways to incorporate them all. Once we’d established a basic understanding of the path we were going to take, we got to work on the 3D model.

Challenges:

Discussing our vision for the model and deciding what kind of impression we wanted it to leave was relatively the most challenging part of the process. Everyone had slightly different ideas but we talked it over until we were all on the same page, and that didn’t take very long.

To make this process go more smoothly, I found myself having to put myself in my teammates’ shoes. I wanted to understand their thoughts so as not to interpret them without a full understanding of what they envisioned. Then, if I had a better idea, I had to show them that (1) I understood theirs, (2) they might be able to expand on it and (3) I could add to it.

B) Design:

Our creation is a depiction of openness, respect, and inclusion. There is also an emphasis on immigrants staying proud of who they are and where they came from. The two orange stick people are part of a support group, ready for the yellow stick person to join them if he needs to talk. This is also a metaphor for a generally welcoming environment, and our main solution is for this to be provided by the general public.
