Why do we compete when there is no competition?

The video One Human Family, Food For All by Caritas Internationalis, demonstrates the importance of working together as opposed to competing. The characters in the video all surround one bowl of soup that is far out of reach for all of them. They all have spoons, but their spoons are too long to reach their mouths. As they all struggle to feed themselves, they fight with the others around them by throwing food, hitting other people etc. Eventually, one person gets his spoon broken and it falls into the abyss bellow the people. Suddenly, the others start to work together to feed him, and they begin to all work to feed each other. The ultimate message of this video is that working together and being selfless is the best way to achieve happiness. Humans can be bitter, selfish, and very cold towards one another. We all have this survival instinct to try to outlive or “win” against others around us, even when it isn’t necessary. In our own time, we soon discover that this is a destructive mind set, and we learn to change our ways little by little. The journey towards happiness isn’t one we must embark alone, but it is one we must be willing to share.
