1. Pathways to a Theme

When you have read your chosen story, respond to the following questions:

  1. What is happening in the story? Answer in point form or full sentences.
  • Soldiers came and banned girls from going to school
  • The soldiers came and took Nasreen’s mom and dad.
  • Heard grandmother heard about a secret school
  • They went to it
  • She learned a lot and made a new friend Mina.
  • She was shy before and met a friend who opened up to
  • She learned how to read, write, and to add and subtract
  • While the girls were learning the soldiers knocked on the door and was wondering what they were doing; lucky they didn’t get caught
  1. Identify and describe the conflict in the story.
  • Those girls couldn’t go to school and get the education that they needed
  • They took her mom and dad
  • That she was shy and couldn’t speak her opinion
  1. Brainstorm words or phrases that connect to the class discussion on the human condition.

Human Nature: We always need to be learning new things. Also, she lost her mom and dad and so she became really reserve.

Human Society: It was illegal to go to school for girls; sometimes laws can be unfair.

How we live our lives: We have the opportunity to have education and have lots of doors open for us; others don’t have we don’t realize that usually. Education is a big part of our lives and it can change our lives for the better

  1. What are 2-3 the theme or big idea of the story? Create a theme statement.

-You can create a theme statement by using the formula topic+treatment (+/-) = result. Eg. In Macbeth, one could say that “ambition + too much = destruction”. Therefore the theme statement would be “Too much ambition can lead to destruction

-A theme statement has no absolutes, no cliches, and no conversational language. Eg. “I think its to never judge a book by its cover” is NOT a good theme statement. 

Topic Girls Education + treatment(+/-)  Available  = result  Better quality of life

If education is available for everyone it creates more opportunities

Topic Laws + treatment(+/-)  Unfair = result Mistreatment

  1. Change the theme statements into deep questions. What can be the result of too much ambition? OR Can too much ambition lead to destruction?
  • Is education and understanding the key to peace?
  • Is understanding other people’s perspective the key to move forward as a society?

When you have read your chosen story, respond to the following questions:

  1. What is happening in the story? Answer in point form or full sentences.
  • Lina found a sandal but there’s only one and met the girl with the other one
  • They both wanted to keep the sandals and Feroza grandmother said it was silly to only keep one
  • So they shared the sandals; one day one girl would wear it and the next they would switch
  • They became the greatest friends over a sandals
  • Later one in the story Lina got on a list so her family could go to America but Feroza didn’t get on the list
  • Lina gave Feroza the sandals because she couldn’t go to America with no shoes, but Lina got a pair and gave the sandals to Feroza.
  • Feroza gave Lina one of the sandals as a memory of there friendship

 

2. Identify and describe the conflict in the story.

  • The conflict of the story is that both of them at the start had only one sandal and didn’t want to share at first
  • After the agreement of sharing them, Lina got on a list to go to America and Feroza didn’t
  1. Brainstorm words or phrases that connect to the class discussion on the human condition.

Human Nature: They both thought of themselves first and then thought of each other; and realized it would be better to share

Human Society: In this story again girls couldn’t go to school because there wasn’t enough room in the classrooms ( boys took first priority )

How we live our lives: If we think of others before ourselves selves it will benefit us in the long run.

Making most of what you have even if it’s very little

  • Is putting our selves in other people’s shoes the best way to understand/help them?
  • Why do we tend to put ourselves before other people
  • What would happen if we put other people before our ourselves most of the time

 

 

 

 

Bio Technology &Ethics Project

This is Caitlyn’s and I project. In this project,  we learned so much while we were reflecting on the ted talk. It showed me that life today could/ will not be the same as life would be in a few years from now; technology is growing and discovers have been made to create a designer baby. A baby that can be modified into in my words “a human Barbie”. That concept if you think about it in that way is very scary. Yes, this technology is very well designed with the use of CRISPER and the RNA, etc. But I feel like this technology should be only used to prevent/ take away a disease that your child may have or has, instead of customizing you baby

Bio/Ethics Project

Ceramics Group Project

Group members: Aliyah, Lauren, Lily, and Ricky

Here is our ceramics group project, we made a wine holder, a cheese plater, a wine cup, and a corkscrew, by using clay.

In this project, I feel like we did a really good job working together. We first were on the drawing board and decided on the idea of making dinner items and make it abstract to show others what abstract means. We all were on the same page when it came to this idea, and we started to design our dinner items.

In our group, we picked on what we wanted to make and we individually made it but we helped each other in the making of the project. I feel like this is a great way of doing a project because if someone is in need of help; the group member can work together and make something great. That’s exactly what we did; we worked together and created abstract dinner art.

An example of our group work, was when I needed help on the wine glass Lily and Lauren helped me make the base of it and we did in a way that I wouldn’t have thought of myself. Having group members in the group that have different perspectives can find an easier/ more creative ways to do things that you wouldn’t have thought of it yourself. So when I struggled to make the base the wine glasses we came together and accomplished the thing we strived to do.

Connection-Based Learning Project

In our group, we were really good with our planning stage for the project. We planned what each member of the group was doing, and also when it should be done. For me in the group I had all my work done on time and to the best of my abilities, overall I think it went really well

In our innovation group we created something that isn’t too common; a way to have electricity without using solar power, and I feel like we accomplish our goal and that makes me really happy with the results.

Like I said before I did my part in the project but I also help others in my group if they had difficulties with there part.

Last but not least we shared our final product with a video instead of a blog post and I feel like that was a very creative way of expressing our learning in a different way.

Science 9: Edible DNA Model

This model represents a DNA and what it would look like. In this model, we used 4 different colored marshmallows to represent the base of the chemicals. Yellow is adenine, Green is guanine, Pink is cytosine, Orange is thymine. All of these chemical bases are found in DNA. DNA is found in your body to make protein and instructs the organism what to do. That is why DNA is located in the nucleus due to the nucleus being the control center.
