“The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” Narrative

He took one last drag on his cigarette and snapped it away. Then with that faint, fleeting smile playing about his lips, he faced the firing squad; erect and motionless, proud and disdainful, Walter Mitty the Undefeated, inscrutable to the last. The group of gunmen were confused while Walter Mitty stood with his head held high. “Was that a threat?” said one of the snipers. Mitty responded with a slight head nod, and without the signal to shoot, one of the guards shot and missed Mitty completely. The bullet ricocheted and flew back hitting a different guard directly in the chest; he dropped to the ground while the room filled with pandemonium… “Walt, can you come over here and help this poor man!” screamed his wife. An old man was lying on the side of the curb soaking in a puddle “I was just trying to catch the bus and I guess I must have slipped” said the old man, who was soaked head to toe. The rain was pouring and leaving the streets dangerously slippery. Mitty looked at the man who was slowly getting up from the puddle, he looked very distraught, so he and his wife offered him a ride home. The man was delighted and they cautiously walked back to the car. After several turns they passed the local beach. Mitty saw it out the corner of his eye wishing it was hot enough to relax down there all day.  Stretching out far past the drop off, Mitty saw a man flaring his arms and grasping for air. Mitty was slowly getting up to get a closer look when he heard the man struggling.  The water was leaving the man’s voice unclear but Mitty knew exactly what to do, he jumped in as fast as he could and started swimming.  The man slowly disappeared in the water so Mitty stopped and began to tread, while looking back at the beach only to discover that not one person was even fazed. He was interrupted by a hand reaching out of the water, but it sank back down. Mitty went under and started swimming down towards the man who was becoming clearly unconscious. Mitty pulled the man up and held him above the water. He slowly dragged him further and further back to the shore and noticed people starting to run towards the water to offer help. The man was laid down on the sand when the local lifeguard came running to administer CPR.  After a few moments, the man started to breathe and cough up water.  Mitty was deemed a hero for saving the man’ life.  Mitty was exhausted and looked haggard after such an experience which seemed so real.
