Fire:

  • For a small fire, smother it with a lid, baking soda, wet towel, etc. (don’t use water in case of grease fire.)
  • Don’t leave a hot stove unattended.                                                          

Burns/Scalds

  • Turn all pot and pan handles inwards so they can’t be knocked over and cause burns.
  • For a minor burn, run under cool (not cold) water until pain subsides, apply an ointment, and cover with a sterile, non-adhesive bandage.

Chemicals

  • Don’t mix chemicals together
  • Should be stored in cupboards away from food and heat.

Slips/Trips/Falls (i.e. how to prevent)

  • Clean up spills immediately
  • Put down an anti-slip carpet

Cuts 

  • Hold the food being cut by tucking fingers and thumb under your hand to avoid cutting them.
  • Cut on a cutting board, not in your hand.
    (don’t do this)
  • If a minor cut occurs, wash wound and apply pressure until bleeding subsides. Apply an ointment and a sterile bandage.

Heavy Lifting

  • Lift with your legs not with your back and don’t twist your body when holding heavy objects.
  • Ask for assistance if the object cannot be carried by one person.

How to Prevent Food Poisoning

  • Handle raw meat in a safe manner
  • Make sure everything is cleaned thoroughly (hands, dishes, cloths, worktops)

Waste Management

  • Make compost
  • Recycle

Personal Hygiene

  • Wash hands after every task
  • Do not touch your nose, mouth, eyes, ears, hair, or face during cooking. Make sure your cover your nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing
