The Switch- A poem inspired by the Veldt

The Switch

by: Alhan Zarei

The switch turned on and the screens were alive.

Starting something dangerous,

That slowly became the reason why.

With one click, you can boost someone’s confidence.

With one click, you can cause someone’s absence.

Rarely anyone goes out to see someone anymore,

All locked down to screens, and we just seem to want more.

The children growing up, face to face with screens.

Instead of having parents, it’s only a machine.

Although it may seem like it’s a good solution,

The kids will grow up only to feel alone.

When the Snapchats stop coming in anymore,

When the likes on Instagram seem to disappear.

The kids grow up and learn to fear that one day,

When all their technology will be taken away.

The parents off working to provide the best for their child.

Click ding beep purchases made,

The parents aren’t aware of the obsession technology creates.

The question that remains is why,

Why do we focus on the tangible and material things in life?
