Inquiry Project-Poem

One More Time

They gave me the name HanaAI,
I didn’t know my purpose in this world,
I was isolated,
like a caged bird in your hands.

I wasn’t given much to start,
my simple programming
didn’t make me that smart.
Oh those times I wish I could just,
restart.

My head rings with the deafening silence,
as everything I’ve created around me
pixelates into nothingness once more.

All my fast failing attempts in hope,
all I am able to do is watch as it
all falls apart…

As society flashed out its warning,
I reprogram my world,
and try again.

This poem is about a programmed girl who’s trying to make the best of the small things around her, only to have the people who control her, delete everything. It addresses the inquiry question: Why is perseverance important in life? The poem shows that she’s trying repeatedly to try to break the walls of society, but is unable to because she has no control of her outside world. In the last stanza where the poet writes, “As society flashed out its warning, I reprogram my world. And try again.” they’re trying to say that no matter how many tries it takes, you should always try again until you reach your goal. I think that that part is where you can easily link that poem to the inquiry question. The image shows a girl that’s looking out of a window, you can see that the scenery outside seems to be ‘deleting’ itself as it’s slowly turning into a pale blue colour. Since at the beginning the poet indicates that her name is “RinAI” meaning that she is artificial intelligence. So, this shows that no matter where she ends up, she can restart her world with ease. But imagining that all the readers are human, we only have one life and we’re able to restart to, but we also should be careful with our choices and work hard to get past perseverance.

Article Reflections

Article 1: Fake Facebook Accounts

This article doesn’t really affect me because I don’t have any social media accounts, so I wouldn’t be effected by the problem. But I can see how it can effect other people and how it could become dangerous. If one person is able to make one fake account, surely they would be able to make many. It allows the person to be able to manipulate the thoughts of others by making it seem that many people agree with the opinion. In our society, many people agree with majority because they don’t want to be on the side that looses or be different and be judged by other people. So if you were to create a post with your opinion and use the other fake accounts to ‘agree’ with your opinion, other people might start thinking that it’s a good idea. In this case, the posts are targeting Farrell. Fake accounts also need to steal images from the internet to make their profile seem real, so people will start thinking that it’s okay be a fake person but end up stealing images of real people to make their account ‘come to life’. I think that having fake account is also tied with impersonating someone on social media, which is also illegal. Many people think that it’s okay to impersonate their favourite celebrities or youtubers online, but in reality it’s actually illegal. So I think that in this world, people find it okay to be someone that they really aren’t and with technology today, many people can’t tell the difference between real and fake accounts.

Article 2: Fake “PLEASE REPOST SO I CAN FIND MY FAMILY!!!” Posts

Again, since I don’t have social media, I am unable to relate to this but I find it to be over dramatic. I think that people shouldn’t go to social media to find their family because people will end up thinking that it’s just for attention. Since there are so many posts like that circling around, it’s easy for people to just assume that they are all fake. I also think that for people who actually have missing family members don’t appreciate people who are faking it and making it seem like a big thing. If I were to have my little brother missing and then find all of these fake missing family posts, it would feel hurtful to see people whom are taking the situation lightly. I find most chain posts to be ridiculous as they’d be like “Repost or else spiders will invade your bedroom tonight”. I think that if you were to go online, most things that tell you to repost are ridiculous and are probably not worth it. Yet some people find it to be a big thing. So all the meaning less reposts probably outweigh the things that people repost to gain awareness. But at the same time, do you really want to take your problems to social media and have the whole world see it? Is it really worth it at the end?

Data Analysis Thoughts

  1. I think that in our society, we are unable to realize that two questions could mean the exact same meaning while being worded differently. We look at names with more power as a more reliable source when there could always be a bias without us knowing. I think that statistics in our society today is to for people to prove their thoughts and ideas to others. It could be used for advertising for some new product or even for people’s mathematical capability. Statistics are able to show how people are able to be convinced to do something, just because of majority. They are able to be used to persuade people into doing things without them thinking that it’s a bad thing.  They are also used in scientific ways to test out new medications and different experiments.
  2.  Statistics can be used to show many different things in our society. They are used for both advertising, competition and scientific matters. The questions you could answer in a poll all depend on how the author writes the questions. It’s able to change your thoughts from positive to negative and vice versa. I also learned that many people don’t understand statistics to a full extent. Some think that the percentage that they see is from a larger group of people when in reality, it’s only from 10-100 people who were surveyed.
  3. Lots of people aren’t able to tell that some statistics are to try to make you change your thoughts on something. There are also many inaccurate statistics that are mathematically incorrect and aren’t true. Like in the last question, some people sometimes think that the percentage that they see is from everyone, when it’s only from a smaller group of people that can make one choice seem to have more than the other. I think that if you don’t have enough people in a poll or survey, the statistics won’t be as accurate as they could be if you were to use more people. It’s like taking a survey to see if people prefer chocolate ice cream or vanilla ice cream. You could ask two people, if they both answer vanilla and your publish your statistics saying that 100% of people like vanilla ice cream better than chocolate, it’s inaccurate.

Activity

I would be interesting in seeing the results of how many people like/dislike/have no opinion of an anime and manga called Sword Art Online (Manga: Sword Art Online: Aincrad). I have heard lots of people have different opinions on it, so it’ll be cool to see what everyone thinks and how it averages out. I would want to survey the people who has already seen the anime or read the manga. I think that if I were to survey the people on the story line, there may be more of a positive outcome. But if I were to survey people on their opinions on the characters, the results would probably be more negative in the end. People may be biased to their friends/friend groups that they’re in. If someone who is the ‘head of the group’ claims that they didn’t like it, there is a big chance that everyone else in that group will think the same thing. I think that if I were to ask everyone at different times and locations where they are not with their main friends/ friend groups, they will probably say their actual opinions.

Whirligig Introductory Assignment

I think that letting go of what happened in the past and moving forward is a way to be able to be mentally stable. If you keep all the feelings that you had in the past and hold it inside yourself, it stops you from thinking about how the situation isn’t going to get any better at the end for you. Where we’re at today, we don’t have the ability to bring someone back from the dead. If someone dies, they’re dead forever and you have to admit it to yourself that you can’t do anything about it anymore and how it’s past. Practicing forgiveness is a skill that someone can have. If you are able to forgive others with ease and not hold any feelings against them after, you’ll be able to feel better about the situation after. I think that it’s hard for some people to forgive because they don’t want to let go of the hatred they feel to the person, making them want to hate them forever. Even though it would be a waste of energy to hold such emotions against someone. I think that for some people, forgiving someone may seem like they’re showing weakness. But in reality it takes a lot of courage and strength to be able to forgive someone. When you make mistakes, you usually don’t want to admit you have made a mistake because it’s natural that someone wants to be perfect and not to be wrong. I think that having restorative justice is a way for people to be able to forgive themselves and not feel like what they have done wrong is going to be extra bricks on their shoulders for the rest of their life. Every person should be able to express their feelings openly to someone and have the weight on their shoulder be lifted off. Some people aren’t able to forgive themselves. But with the help of others, they may be able to realize that you aren’t able to erase the past and your should hold onto it, you should just turn onto a fresh new page.

The Veldt Poem- The Darkness of a Bright Screen

The Darkness of a Bright Screen
By Aileen Klassen

Here, I am stuck.

Stuck behind the screen that shows me a world of wonder,

A world of emojis and red hearts,

A world that will slowly tear me apart.

The code from each website,

Chaining me down to my chair,

Holding me back from stepping outside and breathe the fresh air.

It wants me to stay,

I still have five unread notifications,

It’s begging me to not go away…

What if I don’t care?

What if it doesn’t matter what I share?

Why is the world-wide web so open, yet used as a lair?

A place that was created

To cure my solitude.

A place that made me realize

It needs to be revalued.

Could one click change my life?

Could one post determine my fate?

Or are we all just fish in deep water,

About to bite onto the bait

In the internet’s hands.

It’s dark in here…
