Circle Talk – Aiden Naresh
What did I learn about myself/others from the circle talk?
I learned a lot about the people that my classmates find important in life, what they value, and what they like about themselves. It was very interesting to hear about where people/their family came from. It is not really a topic that comes up in normal conversations, at least for me. I realize how diverse Canada is compared to the rest of the world. There are so many different cultures/beliefs/traditions here. Every single person had a different coming up story.
New Media Challenge
How to destroy the single story
A single story can be created by anybody about anything. They are a pre determined opinion formulated upon false or incomplete information. In other words, they are stereotypes that have been blow out of proportion. Adiche sums up the single story very well in her TED talk “showing a people as one thing, as only one thing, over and over again and that is what they become.” In recent times the media have covered countless stories using these one-sided opinions. Think about how they used to cover Mexico when Trump was running for president. Constant generalization and maligning of the Mexican people, facts that were simply untrue for most Mexicans, and on top of that Trump was fueling the fire using his infamous “We are going to build a wall” campaign. All of these allegations against Mexico started to form people’s opinions, therefore creating a single story.
The default position is just as hurtful as the single story except for it is on a smaller scale. Judging somebody for what they wear, eat, or even listen to is a default position, and that position will never change unless you do something about it. It is easy to destroy built up thoughts about somebody, all you need to do is talk to them. Base your facts on what you learn about them, destroy the default position and in turn the single story about them. That is what Michael Wesch did in a sense. He hates country music, that is his default. When he moved away from his home town he also moved away from his roots, he started to like other things and soon changed his entire lifestyle to something that suited him. While this was going on, he was building a prejudice towards the things that he grew up with.
For Wesch it was important to figure out how to demolish this hate, or at the very least to figure out why he hates it. He went down to his sister’s place to do some country line dancing. An activity that he would never do in a million years. In the scenario he is not doing it for enjoyment, at least not yet. He is trying to analyze what he hates about the activity and the music.
While trying to learn about himself Wesch realized why people love country music so much. Except it was not a personal discovery. Before going to the line dance him and his sister were talking about why she got into country music. It turns out his sister was going through some difficult times in her life and she used country line dancing to cope. “I understood this place, I understood my sister, I understood her love for this music, the dancing, the people, I could see the moment where her life started to turn around”. Wesch after learning about all of that finally realized why people love the genre so much.
That is just one example of how people can overcome hate. In theory it is not hard, you just have to exit your comfort zone, “you have to open yourself up to others and discover why they like what they like”. For Wesch that meant to try something that he had long forgotten, and for you that can mean anything. Try to stop hating, be more open, and love. That will destroy the single story.

Should Citizens Worry
As it appears the police have a very fair privacy system. Every 30 days they clear all of the logs full of any videos that may affect privacy.
