Sam’s Skirt – Aiden Hall

Sam’s Skirt

Sam was a middle school student
Sam’s love for sports was quite prudent
Sam bought new shoes
And often would lose
Though Sam’s goalie skills were concludent.

Field hockey, Sam had then viewed
A goalie spot Sam had pursued
Sam got a skirt
For making people eat dirt
And also Sam is a dude.

In the story “Sam the Athlete” by Stuart McLean, a young boy named Sam accidentally joins what he presumes is an all girls field hockey team, when he is called Samantha on the field and receives a skirt as the team’s official outfit. But because he did so well he wanted to stay even if he had to wear the skirt.

Sam should not have kept wearing the skirt, even though he eventually became comfortable in it and continued to wear it to fit in with the rest of the team for many more pragmatic reasons.

It is revealed later “that it was perfectly alright for boys to play on the field hockey team” and that he “could go to the next field hockey game in his shorts”. Considering that they are going to be playing outside a lot, the shorts would be much warmer, plus they are comfy and easy to wear.

Most of the girls would probably be just fine with him wearing a skirt but others might feel quite uncomfortable around the fact that he is wearing a skirt and some other less innocent reasons, or perhaps just fine with is the wrong term.

Lastly some people might make fun of him for wearing a skirt during field hockey, and while most will not there will undoubtedly be some group or person who will pick on him, which could be quite harmful for self-esteem.

Now granted he could just play it cool and rock it like a Scotsman which he does end up doing, because the rest of the team wears them and he was comfortable enough but as stated above he has no real pragmatic reason to wear it.

Now with Samuel’s decision rebated
Though it was brave enough I can’t hate it
He could have worn shorts
And unsettled the sports
And embarrassment he could have negated.
