Surface Area of Composite Shape

IMG_0240

In class we were assigned the task of determining the surface area of a composite shape.

My strategy was to find the surface area of both the shapes separately and subtract the overlap.

Small Box: 8×8=64 8×3=24 8×3=24 64+24+24=112

Big Box: 20×8=160 20×12= 240 12×8=96 160+240+96=496

112+496=608

608×2=1216

64+64=128

1216-128=1088cm squared
