1.2 Investigating Matter Summary

Chapter 1.2 covers lessons about matter such as: Chemical Change, Temperature and Changes of State, Kinetic Molecular Theory and a lab called Bag of Change. Matter is anything with mass or volume (examples: you, your phone and water.) A chemical change is different from changes of a state. A chemical change is a change in matter however a change in state is when one substance changes between states (example: water in solid form, to liquid, to gas.)

The Kinetic Molecular Theory describes the movement of the particles in matter. Every matter has small particles that are constantly moving for example: a solid’s particles move very close together and just vibrate, a liquid’s particles are further apart and slide passing each other and a gases particles are spread out can move freely and faster then the other state’s particles. The more energy a particle has the more it will move so gas particles have a lot of energy where solid particles have very little.

The Bag of Change Lab was an interesting lab, I didn’t anticipate the results that came out, I didn’t think that the colour would change or that the matter would start to heat up. From the lab I learned that by mixing different matters it can create an entirely new one and that matters can change in an instant.
