Unit 6 Summary assignment – Adam Merbah – Pre Calc 11

For the Unit 6 summary assignment, we were assigned the task of demonstrating a mathematical concept presented to us throughout the past week. For this assignment, I chose to demonstrate how to solve rational equations (6.5)

When solving rational equations in this unit, we are usually looking at two fractions with the sum or difference of those two fractions, and then solving for a variable. The way we go about solving them is to:

  1. Identify non-permissible values
  2. rewrite equation with a lowest common denominator
  3. Eliminate the lowest common denominator
  4. finally, solve for x and check your solutions with the non-permissible values

Note : linear equations have 0 or 1 solution. quadratic equations have 0,1 or 2 solutions.

Ex 1.

Proportional : cross products are equal

when you have two products that are equal, we would still try and find a lowest common denominator between both products, eliminate the denominator, combine like terms and solve for x.
