1.Why are you passionate about your job?
“I love working with students and media. Students have such a passion for it – it’s easy to share in that passion.”
2.What obstacles have you faced to get where you are today?
“It took a while to get into the teacher college. I kept trying to get into SFU; they have a really small program. I finally applied at UBC and got in.”
3.What advice would you pass on to someone interested in what you are doing?
“Get started! We need great teachers! 😊 Don’t just focus on your education, life experience is important. Travel is a great way to educate yourself.”
4.Would you be open to further contact from Riverside students and if so, how can someone contact you?
“Absolutely.”
5.What education did you need to get your job?
“Working with media I continue to get further education. I just finished a course on creating an RPG 3D game and also finished a course on game character development in Blender. I love to learn so I don`t mind. Learning is fun!”
6.What were your previous jobs?
“Lots of things: painter, forklift driver, video store clerk, cashier, tiler, etc. My best job is the one I have now!”
What I learned from this interview and these questions is that even if you do one thing you can pursue other career/jobs in the future. I also learned it’s good to have a job you enjoy, are passionate about and to keep looking for different jobs if you are unhappy with your current situation. The part where Mr. Schoenhals mentioned traveling and how it is a good way to educate yourself was also interesting as I haven’t heard it mentioned a lot. When he said “Don’t just focus on your education” was also important as sometimes it can be easy to over-work yourself.
This interview was engaging as i’m currently interested in things related to Media Design (The subject Mr. Schoenhals teaches). Seeing how he got into this career/subject helped me better understand what I might do in the future.
