I have learned a lot about my digital footprint. For instance, even things a person may delete will continue to exist somewhere. Building a good or professional digital portfolio is extremely important and could be the difference between getting a great job you had been waiting for or facing rejection. If you were going to hire someone, it only makes sense to hire someone with a good or neutral reputation, rather than a bad one. People tend to judge based on the worst of a company’s employees, not the best.
Having a good digital footprint could be a major player in whether or not you can get a job. If you are trying to go into any part of the entertainment industry, being well known and having a good reputation is helpful because you would be a large help in promoting the production. Talent and work ethic are more important in getting a job, but it would be very helpful to have talent that can promote for them as well.
Having a bad reputation makes getting a job a lot harder. Especially for entertainers, but even more so for politicians. Saying one wrong thing ten years ago could end up causing a lot of commotion in the current day. People tend to want to see perfection when looking towards those who have influence or represent their home. Being hated by the people who’s support is what your career rides upon puts you in a dangerous place. Redeeming one’s self to the general public is an extremely difficult feat. At times, even impossible.
There is a lot a person can try to avoid doing to keep their digital footprint safe and appropriate. Every little detail matters, so it can be difficult to manage. One thing to do is always watch the language you use. Online, anyone can see what you post. Some people are offended by the use of a profanity, even if it is only being used to express the strength of an emotion or thought, rather than in a way to offend others. If one person says you are rude, even if there is no actual reason, there will be others who will agree with them.
A rather well known piece of advice is to avoid giving out any personal information online. It seems easy enough, but it is not. Everyone makes mistakes, even the most careful of people. Letting something slip by accident can happen. There are always very thorough people as well. Keeping yourself safe from things such as identity theft or actual theft is always the priority. There are evident things, like not giving away passwords, but even your full name can be enough for an impostor.
One great way of keeping your personal information safe is to avoid using open wi-fi networks. Most specifically, avoid entering passwords or personal information when using an open wi-fi network. If you are not sure whether a network is safe or not, it is probably best to wait until you have access to a network that you know is secure.
I have learned a lot about digital footprints, but something I have found is that the digital world may seem scary, and it can be at times, but it can also be a wonderful place. There are lots of ways to learn different things and connect to different people. All of your experiences may not be the best, but we should make use of what we can gain from using electronics. We can choose whether these devices create or destroy happiness, so we should do our best to make it the former.
Everyone starts off with a blank slate. How you fill it shows who you are.
